So after a years worth of farting about with different directions, I have decided to go down the classical route and learn to play properly.
It's my theory that to break the rules, you have to learn them first. Yes that does sound sad, but it makes sense if you chew on it.

Any classical guitarists in the house? How long have you been playing and how far do you think your skills have furthered in that time?

My parents are both really musically gifted so growing up I always had a guitar in my hands. No one in my family is very interested in metal other than my sister and I so it's always just been acoustic and shit. I've never found it hugely interesting, but for me it was like some kids and soccer or baseball. That sport or activity you were in your whole childhood without really noticing whether you liked it or not. Regardless, though, it's been about 15 years and I'd say I'm pretty decent. I'm no Hendrix, but I can keep up at least.

When I was 12 or 13 I started to play a little more seriously having just hit puberty and was just another angst ridden teen wanting to play in a metal band. I'm kind of an asshole and a perfectionist, though, so I never really stuck with a band. Didn't help that I had unrealistic standards for both myself and band-mates, but it was fun getting drunk at shows before I was even legal to drive. Definitely stick with classical, though. Metal really wears me out. Then again, I'm pretty lazy.
