View Full Version : Disney buying out Marvel

Not a movie.
"So why is this in the movie forum?" you ask.

Because this will affect the Marvel movies that are planning to pop up all over the place. While it isn't certain that Disney will change the dynamic of successful Marvel movies, I fear that this buyout will change gritty, actiony, R-rated superhero movies to PG-rated, kids movies.

Not to mention I fear for the continuing comic series themselves, however since there is no forum to discuss comic books, nevermind that part.

Do you think Disney buying Marvel will change the upcoming Captain America, Avengers, Antman, and possibly Deadpool movies?

My greatest fear is that they'll no longer make a genuine Deadpool (As in the Deadpool from the actual comics, not that ridiculous version of him in Wolverine: Origins) movie. Because Deadpool is anything but kid friendly,

On the plus side, if Disney fucks up Marvel heros' movies, then hopefully it'll open the door for some good DC heroes to have good movies. Batman's got his shit on lock, but I do want to see good and new Superman, Flash, and maybe Teen Titans movies.

What do you guys think?

Dartful_Dawger
08-31-2009, 9:20 AM
Also, more superheroes TV shows because Disney owns ABC.

ugh, this isn't good at all.

Hats of!
08-31-2009, 9:26 AM
Well Lost is an ABC show, and Lost isn't really a kid-friendly show.

Dartful_Dawger
08-31-2009, 9:35 AM
The public image of superheroes is that they're for kids. Even if the guy is a drinking, cussing, smoking, smartass that kills bad guys for fun rather than justice, people still interpret it as a boy scout in pajamas beating up baddies.

Lost is obviously not for kids. Superheroes kind of are, even when they aren't supposed to be.
The comic book fan base isnt big enough to pull down enough ratings to get an adult superhero show, so most superhero shows are aimed towards little kids.

BmphP
08-31-2009, 9:37 AM
You realize Disney is not solely for kids, right? They own many properties and I forgot the studio that they own that does R rated movies, but there's a studio that they own that does R rated movies.

Dartful_Dawger
08-31-2009, 9:46 AM
Superhero movies ares seen as directed towards kids already. Disney fiercely upholds it's family friendly image.

Yes, No Country for Old Men and Pulp Fiction are owned by Disney, but again, people don't see those aimed towards children. Jules and Vincent aren't costumed heroes. The public sees superheroes as mainly for kids.

I doubt that they would make an R-rated superhero movie, and risk parents protesting that they're trying to poison their kids with violence, and adult themes and fruity cereal and whatnot.

I don't know, I just hope they don't change too much.

Hats of!
08-31-2009, 9:56 AM
The Dark Knight then? Hardly aimed at kids.

Batman is DC Comics.

PrettyHateMachine
08-31-2009, 10:00 AM
leave it to Disney to not leave well enough alone.
call it hopeless optimism, but maybe they'll leave the integrity of the comic book world intact.
is it sad i couldn't even type that with a straight face?

Dartful_Dawger
08-31-2009, 10:15 AM
The Dark Knight then? Hardly aimed at kids.

DC, not Marvel.

Plus DC is owned by Warner Bros, a company not so keen on maintaining it's family friendly image, because it has none. So Warner Bros gives a lot of freedom to let them do whatever the fuck they want as long as it sells.

Disney is known to be a complete dictatorship making sure nothing that has it's name on it can hurt it's reputation.

Hats of!
08-31-2009, 10:26 AM
Yes but you said that superheroes are generally considered for children. The Dark Night, however, isn't. Sure it isn't marvel, but both marvel and dc kinda sucks.

Dartful_Dawger
08-31-2009, 10:30 AM
I like comic books so I'll disagree.
And The Dark Knight was dark and adult and overwhelming popular and successful.
I also doubt Disney would ever risk putting out a movie like that.

Warner bros, as I said, doesn't care as long as it's profitable.

So do I, but comics produced by DC and Marvel are seriously stupid. At least most of them.

HappyPalooza

They said they wouldn't distribute the Avengers movie arc and leave it to Paramount but who cares about that? I just don't want them to fuck around with the films which is really all that concerns me for now. They said they wanted to appeal to the younger male audience they've lost touch with, so I guess that's why all the animated shows will be on Disney XD they said.

Hey, at least there's potential for a Marvel theme park now.

Spastic
08-31-2009, 11:52 AM
Well hopefully we'll get a Disney vs. Marvel game out of it.

HappyPalooza

So Lasseter was meeting with Marvel about a possible project. An animated What If? movie divided into segments might be cool if done right. They'd have to be based on the current Marvel movies though. The real ones. Like what if Tony Stark was the one with gamma rays in him or something.

But I'm sure Pixar could do something cool with it. They've already had one successful superhero film.

HappyPalooza

Hopefully they go about making a real Marvel amusement park and bring the Spiderman ride with it. That was really the only thing actually relating to Marvel as I recall. Everything else just had a name slapped on it like "Fantastic Four Cafe" and stuff.

I kinda liked the Hulk roller coaster, although I imagine they can keep that and change the theme a bit.

HappyPalooza

Totally, I mean, I get that it's harder to relate a roller coaster to a hero, so that's fine. I didn't do the Hulk coaster, but everyone said it's real good so whatever.

Why do I have a bad feeling about Disney buying out Marvel?

I know, it kinda feels like theyre going to lose a lot of fans, or be given more young child-friendly/less complicated themes.

Marvel probably won't have the same feel anymore.

Hell, because it's now owned by Disney, they might even bring out a new teenage boy band for them like Disney (Jonas Brothers, etc.) but meh, I'm tired and don't know what i'm talking about.

Mustache
09-01-2009, 3:54 PM

I'm not of the opinion that it will actually change anything, I just think more than a few people are not going to bother finding out any actual information and will assume it will change. As soon as the ignorant part of the population (the majority) reads that Disney owns Marvel, they'll start a giant bandwagon of hating comic-book superheroes.

HappyPalooza

Yeah to those thinking Iron Man is going to be teaming up with Donald Duck, I don't think Disney wants to completely renovate Marvel or touch on it much creatively, just reap its financial profits.

You guys are being so horrendously assumptive, and pretty uneducated on the matter. Like quite a few people have pointed out, Disney does not focus solely on movies for kids, and why the fuck do you think Stan Lee would let them shit all over Marvel?

Deadpool is not going to be kiddified, don't be daft.

Friend told me about this a few days ago. I'm pretty upset. I feel my monthly Deadpool comics will be less enjoyable. And yeah, the whole movie thing pisses me off too. Superhero movies are not supposed to be rated under PG-13. Not that most Marvel movies are that good, anyway.

Also, my last name is Disney. My check from them is late and I demanded it be on checks with webs and Spider-Man designs on them. What the shit man?

BreakTheWalls
09-02-2009, 6:06 PM
Disney also made the Pirates of the Carribean films, and they're PG-13s, so it shouldn't be as harsh as assumed. But then again, Disney seem to be penetrating the teenage-girls-with-maxed-out-hormones market very fiercely lately (Johnny Depp, Zac Efron, Jonas Brothers, etc.)

One thing is for certain: Punisher is fucked in the ass.

Firstly, this is baseless. Second, they're not going to fuck with the comics, and I'd personally rather see a PG Punisher than the shitfests they've turned out for the series so far.
I personally thought the Tom Jane/John Travolta one was pretty good, and would have followed a series based on that, but it still wasn't everything the Punisher should have been.

You're all fucking retarded if you think Disney is going to change what has recently been a very successful market.

Exactly. Disney, they're not stupid people. Its all about the money, they probably figured this was a wise business move and so did Marvel. See now, with Disney owning them and whatnot, they have more access to larger amounts of money, and therefore can get bigger budgets and whatnot. I really doubt Disney is going to try to control them. They'll more than likely give them the creative freedom still.

I'm sure this has already been mentioned, but Disney owns quite a few companies. They own ABC which plays shows that aren't kid-friendly. I doubt they're going to do some disney character-marvel character crossover like some people are complaining about. I mean, why the hell would they do that? Its probably be totally bizarre.

So, I think good things will come of this. Disney's great except for the channel itself, its really garbage nowadays with all the crap it plays on there, but the movies and everything else is still good.
