View Full Version : Awesome remakes of terrible songs

Have you ever heard a song, and thought "Man, this is great." only to find out later that it's a remake? You look up the original, excited, and find out that it's complete shit.

I think that The Cardigans' version of Iron Man is fucking great, but I really can't stand the original at all.

While it's not a remake, The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony", which I'm sure everyone is more than familiar with, samples The Rolling Stones' song "The Last Time". Which is a shit song.

The Verve, who already had permission to sample the song, got the fuck sued out of them because they "sampled the song too much". So The Stones got the writing credits, and the label that originally owned the rights to "The Last Time", now owns all rights to "Bitter Sweet Symphony".

"This is the best song Jagger and Richards have written in 20 years." - Richard Ashcroft of The Verve.

Butterfly by Crazytown is rather cool, and they sampled some instrumental RHCP song (which was pretty lame).

Just way more stimulating and entertaining than the Weather report version, which I feel was underdone.

Anyways, Trace Bundy's cover of Sweet Child of Mine is just amazing:

Duuuuuude. Muse's "House Of The Rising Sun" is an amazing remake of the original song,
while H.I.M.'s "Wicked Game" is also an incredible remake of the
slow original.

Some bands really rock the remake, however others (Fall Out Boy) fail
at is miserably.

Gah, I would hate to be the person that
fails at remaking an already awful song.

Lol.

I wouldn't necessarily call Helmet's In the Meantime terrible but after listening to Soulfly's cover of it, it just had so much more power and punch into it that the original paled in comparison.

Fucking blasphemer.

Anyways, I like a lot of cover songs of songs that I already like. But originals that I actually don't like?

Dropkick Murphys cover a shit-ton of old Irish ballads and turn them into fucking awesome songs. I'm not a fan of the original Irish music though. This is my favorite of their covers. If I need to get pumped up about something, works great:

One, 'The Last Time' is a decent enough song. Two, who the fuck is 'The Verve?'

Anyway, we just went over this song in class today, and Bill Haley & His Comets did a much better version of "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" than Big Joe Turner. I actually want to do another cover of it, but rock it up a bit more a throw some rough, grungy style vocals over it... give it a bite.

What?! You've got to be kidding me. That cover--the 30 seconds I could stand listening to--was ridiculously horrid.

Personally I can't think of any covers that are seriously better than the originals. Perhaps some older covers, like the one Sieda pointed out, but then I usually don't even know if they're covers.

I'm not really a big fan of the original, but I thought that was horrible. Arrangement? Fine. Musicianship? Fine. It was the god damn guitar tone. Normally I can find something pleasantly musical about 'unpleasant' noise... but in this instance, the guitars made me wish I was deaf. Like fuzzy, rusty iron nails on a chalk board.

I am so torn. I think that's awesome, but the faggoty poserishness of fallout boy and how rediculously scenester twatish and entirely playing to their audience this cover is can't be ignored. Basically if that was a song from a non Tom Burton film it would be awesome, or even a Tim Burton film that isn't Nightmare Before Christmas, but the fact is that film is obsessed over in an incredibly gay and fake way by people who also happen to obsess over fallout boy in exactly the same way, and the obviously marketing-orientated nature of the song makes that awesome cover incredibly gay.
