View Full Version : Something for the profile page

I was just about to post this in the reputation thread, but then the post got pretty long and I didn't want to go stealing it or anything:

I just thought of something, right.
What if you could get badges-labels-award-type things in your profile page?
Like if you have more posts in the Interactive Story forum than anywhere else, you have a little icon that showed that in a comical way. Or if you had more than 7 on the Kickass-O-Meter, you got a spamer icon. Or if you're a mod, you got some funky mod icon. You get one for being from SS, for having more than 5 post-per-day average, for being a fanart nerd, etc. Maybe they could just be something to make fun of people for.
Then you could just hand some out to whoever deserves them, like "Shitty poster" or "JonC" or whatever. Maybe it's complicated, I don't know. It's original though, and it'd take advantage of admin's talent for making up custom titles.

I think thats a good idea, then if they ever brought the beef back, people could use their badges to show how awesome they are instead of join dates :ahe:

"Sammich Badge" "Mod Badge" "SS Vet Medal" "Showcase Pin"

I'd be like, a soldier.

I'd rather them bring back flagging, exiling and pitting.

The Pit should be the first thing brought back.

The pit typically uses the logic that if left alone. They'll destroy themselves.

But, what if they create a society within the pit? :king:

What the hell would having little icons next to your profile accomplish? Does anyone even look at anybody else's profile?

Rebecca.
09-25-2007, 5:10 PM
Hm. I like the idea of it, but it does seem kind of complicated. More bitching would also ensue because people would want their own custom badge/want to create new ones/bother the admins for one even if they don't deserve it. Also, if someone is given the "shitty poster" badge (even though I'd love to see that instated) they'd just bitch about that too.

Too much work for something pretty insignificant.

I_Smell
09-25-2007, 5:20 PM
The Pit was just the spame, but they only let in retards.

+Believe it or not, when we had the Shitty Poster label, the shitty posters wouldn't complain but actually try to better themselves. It was weird.
You'd have to have a rule saying "Don't ask for one and don't ask to have one removed".

EDIT- Like Xbox achievments.

I actually really like this idea. Nice thinking, smelly. The only problem I can think of is, like Rebecca said, the constant complaining by noobs that they want a badge for something that doesn't merit one.

Also, would these be automatic (for post related things) or would an Admin apply it?

I'd rather them bring back flagging, exiling and pitting.
My era of spammers basically ruined exiling. It became a badge of honor to be exiled after we turned spame into a coherent community. (I guess you could say we ruined it)

I like it but Smelly has a good point about the Xbox Achievements thing. This could turn into the admins playing favourites and making unique badges for things like Sammich King. Everyone should have an equal chance to compete for each badge (except SS Vet) and it would just be another cool thing that makes Explosm Explosm. Kind of like the blue flames for spamers in the old forum.

It would work if it was funny - if it just gave elites and SSers more and more attention it would get dull pretty fast.

I_Smell
09-25-2007, 5:29 PM
Yes you fucking did, Derelict.
Also, the ones related to statistics would be, like postcount, posts-per-day, join date, birth date, etc. Some things though, a computer can't measure. Such as douchebaggery. These few would be handed out by admins. Maybe mods, I dunno.

+Relaps would only get Sammich King because he's cool. A whole variety of people on Explosm have custom titles; I got mine way before being elite. Anyway, what you're saying is that everyone should have an equal chance of getting one- But the idea is to recognise people for things. If you made a custom awardthing for generic everybodys, then there'd be no point in them.

Also, the ones related to statistics would be, like postcount, posts-per-day, join date, birth date, etc.

Why did I read that as birth rate?

Every time there's a forum game or contest, a badge could be handed out. Guest comic badge, sprite contest winner, werewolf game winner, stuff like that.

I_Smell
09-25-2007, 5:42 PM
Oh but it'd have to be for something big- Like Explosm Comic Tournament Thing, or the Great VideoGame Project thing.
You could also make one for "Keeps Hosting Random Contests" represented by an image of Bruce Foresithe.

Savaril would get that I think.

This would actually be a really good way of keeping track of all the crazy contests always going on in Showcase. Like the pixel ones that happen so often, or the animation one that just went down.

Seems excessive to me.

Derelict
09-25-2007, 5:50 PM
Why is it excessive? It's not like they'd hand out shit for everything. Just if an Admin feels like it, he'll throw one down.

I like it a lot. I think it would be fun.

I_Smell
09-25-2007, 5:53 PM
It is pretty excessive. Not sure how much that changes wether we should do it or not. It boils down to two things: Rob's opinion and Kwanza's opinion.

Derelict
09-25-2007, 5:54 PM
If Kwanza likes it, Rob won't

I like the idea a lot. Excessive but funky. Seems like it could turn out to be an awful lot of needless effort for the admin-type-guys, though.

Well this, specifically:
Also, the ones related to statistics would be, like postcount, posts-per-day, join date, birth date, etc.

There is already stuff for this there. Making badges and crap for it seems pointless.

Plus all of these separate badges are going to require art to be made for them, then implemented and I doubt that there is something in Vbulletin to do this so the forums would need to be rewritten and we know what happens a lot of the time that's attempted.

Raxo

It's so people feel accomplished for posting.

It's less than a custom title or being elite but it's a reward for posting.

Well fine then Far, we just won't give you any badges.

Although I still think it'll end up turning into people just vying for badges as a status symbol, much like how die hard keeps posting stupid shit in spame so he has more cool points than everyone despite being banned for 2 weeks.

BadAnkle
09-25-2007, 6:11 PM
The admins already do stuff sort of like this every now and then. For instance, remember when Goblin Boy had a large picture of Bill Cosby under each post in spame?

I_Smell

I doubt that there is something in Vbulletin to do this so the forums would need to be rewritten and we know what happens a lot of the time that's attempted.
This is the main issue. Like I said, the decision comes down to
Rob- It's his forum. More or less, he does more posting than the other admins. So it's thumbs up or thumbs down.
Kwanza- If it does come to fruition, he's deciding whether it's possible and whether it's not, whether it's feasable and whether it aint.

Personally, I know a computer can update a page based on some statistics, but VBulletin works on a template, so that might be a spanner in the works. I don't know shit about web-programming.

Plus all of these separate badges are going to require art to be made for them, then implemented

Well that's just silly. They'd be like 50x50 (I'm guessing here) gold medals, or even squares, with an image on them. At a stretch, you could have explanations underneath them. The average Explosmer could make these up. Hell, we did it for thread tags. Obviously they'd look better than that.

BadAnkle
I thought he just did that himself :indiff:

I have the perfect badge for me: "That happened a year ago?"

And that's exactly right I_smell, it's not that hard to make little squares and it needs to be proven feasible first.

I_Smell

You are a perfect example of why not to have this. Nobody knows you, so nobody would get that.

Another reason why I'm sort of opposed to this, I can imagine this happening quite often in general forum threads.

The Rob has spoken. Obviously. Besides, there are a lot of unknowns like me so it wouldn't be possible to have something everyone knew I did.

The thing is, there will always be people who will follow, and there will always be douches messing it up. You can't stop them all, and we shouldn't let them mess it up. At least half of Fan Art is of these annoying noobs posting their crappy comics and disobeying almost every rule you write. We still have a Fan Art, because for the people that do post good comics is that it entertains us and makes us laugh. If we think that badge-like things are going to be used well with people who follow the rules, and have been here a while, then we should do it. We can always stop, but if we never start we would have never seen what it could have been.

People are already competitive with their post counts and titles, medals (while a fun idea) would just make it worse I think.

That would be a pretty pathetic list. And either way, it would have to be for Explosm Admin sanctioned events only.
