Like, omg, custom titles

We knew something like this was going to pop up eventually, but here's an idea I had. I know there's a cash system available somewhere in the deep recesses of vBulletin, and I know that it's pretty modifiable. What if instead of cash, it was turned into points. Points, unlike more forums, wouldn't be handed out for making a post. Instead, if mods saw a discussion-provoking, on topic, just plain good post in their forum, they could award the poster a certain amount of points. Once you have however many points, maybe there could be some sort of "shop" where you can use the points to get like, a custom title, or something else that I neglected to think up before posting this thread. I don't know about VB firsthand, but I know that some forum codes have an automated shop to spend the points at, so the admins don't even have to step in to set the custom title for you.

It would make the forum a lot more interesting. Perhaps we could by little icons to go next to our usernames too (20x20 pixels or something).

I'm for the idea, the only thing that worries me is abuse of the system. Example:

"CAN I HAVE SOME POINTS?"
"No."
"You're a real bitch, Ox."
"No, I'm doing my job."
"UP YOURS YOU PUSSY-FAG!"
"That's it. I'm taking away points from you."

Well that's why it wouldn't be a system where you ask for them.. In fact, if you try to subtly hint at a post and be like "Man I think this sure was a good post.", there should be an option to disqualify that post from receiving points. Also, you should be able to get negative points, for the people who REALLY suck at posting. Say at -10 points, you lose avatar privileges, -20, sig privileges.. Kind of like an advanced version of flagging.

There have been a lot of abuse of this system (hacking) on other boards. It would cause pretty much some chaos on the boards.

Eh, I suppose if it's possible to hack then it's not a good idea after all. And to an extent I suppose Rob is right, though I don't see it being too much different from the elite system, just with more variation. I mean, sure, if it were to be implemented people would make a whole mess of shitty threads just to try and get some points, but I suppose that's to be expected from any new system-type thing implemented, it would pass over. Ah well, if Rob doesn't like the idea that's the end of it. :P

Who the fuck actually tries to be an elite? If you are, then you almost definitely never will be (e.g. JonC). Your idea is nothing like elitification and to suggest so is an insult at best.

I didn't mean anything about people trying to be elite, I just meant that elitification is like a much larger scale version of this idea.. You get suggested for elitification for being a good forum member and actually making worthwhile posts, which is how this system would work. It would be tracked, hzac, so abuse could be watched.

I think that a points system wouldn't work that much. There could be favoritism, so that one person would get more points than other people for no reason. I think it's more cool is the Admins give you their idea for a custom title, not just your idea. That just ends up being like cheap prizes.

Plus, to be fair, the mods would have to comb the forum for good posts and topics. That would just waste their time.
