2nd Explosm Comic Tournament

Someone had to get off their ass and make the thread so here it is.

These aren't exactly set as of yet.

Please read the following
Post your characters in this thread. They must be your own creation. All entries will be considered and the only way you're not going to be able to participate is if the character is unoriginal or we can tell you just didn't try. A stick man ain't gonna cut it.

Entries will be open for 1 week until Thursday at 11:59 pm EST. Plenty of time to get your characters in. Once entry is closed no other submissions will be accepted.

When the tournament starts you will have 2 days to launch your attack. Once your opponent strikes you will have 2 days to ready a counter attack. Each participant will get 2 chances to fight in each battle. Therefore the fights will go like this.

If the person reserves to go first and does not attack within the 2 days the other contestant has an additional 2 days to attack. If neither attack, both are out. If the second gets his attack in then they win by default.

If neither reserves and there is no peep from either contestant after the 2 days are up then they are both out.

Fight starts
Player 1 attacks within 2 days time
Player 2 attacks within 2 days time
Player 1 attacks within 2 days time
Player 2 attacks within 2 days time
Fight ends

Attacks can take as many frames as needed just be sure to have it completed within the time allotted.

Outcome will be determined by a vote at the end of the the fight in a thread made by either myself or Relaps.

Pairings will be done out of a hat style every round with who ever remains.

[RELAPS NOTES]: The Comic Judging should be based on three things:

1. Art: Is it decent? Pleasing to the eye? Terrible?
2. Creativity: Cool situations, interesting ways of handling the fights?
3. Funny: This is a COMIC competiton. It should be funny, but NOT random. Don't make the Flowerpot monster from Arubalanda appear out of your character's pants.

There you have it, the 33.3%'s of judging. Take ALL of these into account. Just because someone can draw well, if their comic is boring, then this whole contest will be a bore, albeit a pretty one. The same thing goes for if it's a crappy looking, hilarious comic. You shouldn't make a comic win on art alone, but it's still 1/3'd of the judging, so don't ignore it either.

Another thing for contestants: Treat your opponents character with respect. If it's a tennis player that fires flaming tennis balls, don't make him a retard in your comic round. Don't have him shitting himself because he's braindead.

NO INSTANT DEATH MOVES: You cannot *kill* opponents. You can kill your own guy, then make him come back to life via the Deus Ex Washing Machina. (:rimshot:)

If you have a big school project coming up, your family members are perpetually and deathly ill or you think you're going to lose interest PLEASE do not sign up and waste our time.

Dr. Kris Worchache (pronounced "war-shack"), a self proclaimed card-carrying Evil Genius and inventor. Age: 29, his hair went grey after working on mind-control shampoo. Not physically strong, but clever in his own right, and pockets full of gadgets, along with a briefcase with a small lab, to which he can create gadgets or formulas very, very quickly.

(Expresses emotion even with glasses on, just change the glasses for things like squinty eyes or anger and such. Cartoony, no?)

Backstory I wrote when I first made him that you don't actually have to read, it's just there for the curious:

At a very young age he found himself lost in the back alleys of Toon Town. With no home, money or family he was left to fend for himself. Never learning to hunt he resorted to thievery in order to survive. At first it was just food but soon after Klepto became aware of his stealth and agility and began stealing larger, more priceless objects.

One day in particular, Klepto had stumbled into a dusty old shop. An old woman sat by the entrance, peeling potato's with a knife that was all too large for the task. Klepto set his sights one a strange red bag. He couldn't tell why but he was drawn to it. Quickly he snatched it up and hid it under his arm. As he turned and headed toward the door he eyed the old woman. He could feel the heat of her eyes watching him as he neared closer.

Klepto had never been caught before and he wasn't going to now, not by some old bat. He lept out the door and fled into the busy streets. He ran and dodged and jumped and climbed until he was sure he was out of danger.

He sat on the roof of a building, settled into the gravel and began examining the bag he'd taken from her shop. Nothing seemed special about it now that it was out in the air and sun of Toon Town. Beside him sat a flower pot and he tossed it into the bag. Only now he knew something was different about this bag. When he placed the flower pot inside it didn't gain any weight nor did the bag seem to lose any room inside.

He'd done it. He'd stolen himself an enchanted bag. He laughed as he threw handfuls of the tiny grey roofing pebbles into the bag and it stayed the same size and weight. He reached around to his side and grabbed some sticky red pebbles and tossed them in.

Then he looked at the red pebbles again. They were covered in blood, his blood. But from where? He grouped his ears, his toes and his fingers. Nope, everything there.
Then he felt around to his backside. A look of horror instantly came over him.

His tail was gone, in it's place a sticky red nub.

Klepto peered back toward the direction he had came, into the sun. There, standing between him and the sun on, the edge of a rooftop, stood the old woman, one arm held out. In her tiny crawl like hand she held onto his lifeless tail.

Then she lept from the edge and into the hustle below and Klepto never saw her again.

Dexter, part of a normally peaceful race of numbers, has found himself lately acting out of character. What could be the reason, speculated the people of his town? Someone would pipe up, "Maybe it's because we always tease him!"

"Why would you tease him?" The wise elder ∞ asked.

"Becoz, he's backwards!" Giggles rung out across the room as the 9 who yelled the answer stood proudly in the back.

They discussed much, fervently and constantly. Conclusions were drawn and speculations made, yet to this day much of them remain unknown. What would cause a poor 7 to snap this way? Who's to say if it were his backwards nature, and how he was teased for it. Maybe it was his decidedly womanly eyebrows ("They make me look sophisticated," Dexter would think to himself on lonely days). Perhaps it's a result of all of his pent up anger.. After all, he can't release it, he has no mouth and thus no way of frowning, smiling, or speaking. Matter of fact, how did the rest of the people speak? Hell. We'll say he was born without a mouth too. There we go. Armed with his patented 7-point shurikens, Dexter hops across the landscape 7 inches at a time, hoping to find some answers on his journey. Answers to what? I have no idea.

Really Angry Robot. Powers are wicked clawed tendrils, buzz saws, anger, an eye-beam, and other basic robot accessories.

EDIT: Basic info: RAR is just a really irritable jerk. He's been that way since he was denied a role in The Matrix. Recently he got his hopes up about being casted as Optimus Prime for the new Transformers, but that dream was dashed as well. Now he mostly spends his time stealing candy from babies and force-feeding them broccoli.

I think I'm pretty interested in joining. This will be my first contest, so I have some questions... First off, what do you mean by "attack"? I'm a bit confused...

Also, do we have to draw on ms paint/photoshop, or can we draw on paper?

You can draw your comics on paper (as I did last contest) or on the computer (as I will this contest). If you draw on paper, make sure you get decent scans of your comics.

By "attack," you are paired off with another member, and then decide who goes first. Player 1 will draw a comic in which their two characters do awesome battle. Player 2 contiues that battle. Player 1 continues that battle. Player 2 then ends the battle.

Ok, so the game is:
Everyone draws a character and enters this tournament that we're in. Then, you're paired up "randomly" like any other tournament.
You draw a comic of your character guy fighting the character guy of whoever you're paired up with. Like a proper comic, like more than a page. After that, the guy you're paired up with draws a comic where his characterguy retaliates. Then you do another one and he does another one.
The aim is to make the funniest, most awesome comics. Whoever's the best gets voted through to the semi-final, then the final. Last time, the winner got a free Explosm T-Shirt. It was Relaps.
SO- The character you draw here is the character you use throughout the tournament. A good tip is to:
Make it versatile so you don't run out of ideas.
Make it easy to draw, your opponent might be a shitter artist than you.
If you do it black&white, make sure you note the colours, so other people can draw it.
Make it funny/awesome.

Fred was a scientist in the 1800's. He was the inventer of the first rocket engine. He was very wealthy, and had all he needed. He loved riding horses at great speeds and racing against his friends. But one day, as he was galloping from his mansion to his laboratory, his horse saw a porcupine crossing the street and reared up, throwing Fred from his saddle. The fall made him paralized from the neck down. After a while he just couldnt handle it, so he asked his assistant to cut off his head... and plant it on his only rocket engine. He believed that he would be able to somehow control the engine with his brain, making him able to move once more. It was a great success. His assistant implanted tubes on his collar connecting his head to the rocket. Now he flies around, having the time of his life.

His name is Pest-Away Man. For those who don't remember the pre-wipe create-a-thon, this guy is the can of pest away with arms and legs. Thanks to a horrible mutation one Drafting class where I erased the body of a muscleman I was drawing (:heya:) and replaced it with a can of anti-pest, PA Man was born. He has the ability to incapacitate insects with his nozzle, and crush you into dust. Also, when he flips upside down he can fly with the help of his nozzle.

In addition to his trusty axe, he uses his magic to incapacitate his enemies. It's going to be a specific type of spell, though, notthing generic or cliché. So don't worry. I'll think of it this week.

Most of us use Flash 5 thru CS3, with the odd PhotoShopped guy. Although last competition had quite a few hand drawn ones as well. You should be able to get a cheap enough copy of 5 or MX. In my HUMBLE opinion, MX is the best for general use.

Just don't use MS Paint.

You're exporting your files as .swf's which can't be directly placed on the forums. If you want your stuff to be animated and be directly on the forums you need to export as an animated gif. Why you're bothering with animations though is beyond me.

This mighty goat is really the same as any goat. He can eat anything (except for souls) is generally phased by nothing and has bad breath.

On occasion however, he will go completely insane, though the only noticeable effects are a heightened sex drive and a larger head (and a stronger neck with it i should think.)

Nebula was created out of the elements of the universe, he can harness any ability, and or element that he so desires, his limbs are loos hanging because of an atom sepearation that takes place inside of his body. Depending on what element that Nebula is using his color and shape can change form.

I personally like gradients Jamez.

It gives it more of a 3d look, plus it's really quick shading.

With this unique character, (Nebula) I'd rather him have a gradient, because he is supposed to be kind of a void of energy, if that makes sense.

However, the reason why many people dislike gradients is that exact reason. It implies a careless job, and many things are not shaded exactly as a gradient would; very few are. Although, some people are able to do a great job with gradients, such as Urser. The way he uses them makes it seem like he put effort into the overall drawing.

I would personally suggest to not use gradients.

Imagine, it sucks because it's not really creative, it has no 'funny factor,' and it has god-like abilities. I mean, fine, if you want to go with that... but, the thing is, you're not the greatest drawer, so the only thing you'd have going for you would be if your comics were funny. That character just has very little humor factor. :/

Aye Lissa nailed it, I didn't mean to say gradients in general, I mean the default ones...I always use gradiants but I use them in a subtle shading method, like one is the base colour, and the other side of the gradient is adjusted to a litter darker/lighter colour to add depth, but when you use a primary colour and black it makes the picture look harsh and a radial would general only make sphere "3d".


Edit: It also makes the pictures look cheap as hell because if you look at all the amatuer flash users they do the same exact thing and that is how you can generally tell them apart. If you look at any good flash picture/animation none use that concept.

This competition is going to be showcasing peoples' different art styles, Urser. If someone wants to dumb down my Battlemage to a much simpler version (as long as he's still recognizable as my character) then by all means, do it. If your style is simple and cartoony, that's the way you'll draw him. I recall that in the first competition, Tyler drew his character at about the same detail level as I did mine (or even more detailed). It all depends on the artist.

If/when I have to draw out Nebula again, I'll probably make him resemble Imagine_This's original design more - but it'll still be done in my drawing style.

Can I point out that Dinosaur doesn't grow and shrink, his size is just inconsistent. He won't suddenly spurt up when confronted. I'll try and keep him the same size throughout a whole comic, it'll just vary from comic to comic (assuming I get past the first round).
