It could be a pretty dodgy idea, as it'll probably get crapped up with "Your team sucks", but it'll provide a place for people to talk about upcoming games in their sports and things like that.
I've seen it on a few forums, and they seem to be very popular sections.

The general forum pretty much suits that category.
This is the internets. A comic forum no-less. Fat kids with asthsma and inferiority complexes lurk here, not sports fans.
On that note.

Fat kids with asthma who play MapleStory appear to be pretty diehard fans of English Premier League to me, haha.
"i lyk man u moar"

"omg ronaldo"

"I wish there was a music forum so I could avoid it"
Hmm, seems like a good idea. I'm just going to make it clear that I will never, ever, ever go in there.

Any sports threads fit into the General Forum. If we keep making all these little categorized sub-forums the GF should just be renamed the News Forum.

I figure the GF can suffice for the odd sports thread once every three months.

We have that NFL thread in the GF. I suppose we could make a thread for other sports as people see fit, but I do not think that a forum just dedicated to sports would go over well.
I would support this idea but not many would post there also like said before the GF will suffice for the sports threads.
A subforum in the GF exclusively for sports could be some sort of compromise.
If we made a Sport forum, only 5% of the whole site will go there. And I'm guessing that a thread will be made every other month, considering no one will go there.

How about a Sports topic tag instead?
It saves space, time, and thread tags are easy to make. That seems quite possible.

Would it ever get used?
How many of you people are actually interested in sports? Not just that, but interested in arguing about them on the internet?

I actually argue about sports alot on the internet when im bored.

I can argue with myself in a sports thread.
Its College Football season!
A lot of people like to argue about sports over the internet and I think some plenty of people will be attracted to it.

Here's an idea for it, though I don't know if anyone will go for it. If a "sport" forum of sorts was created, the moderators for it could be chosen based on how well they follow a certain sport. For example, one mod could be in charge of College Football coverage. Normal users couldn't create threads in the sport forum, but the moderators would post for example, the scores and important stats from whatever game happened that day, and normal users would be able to reply to those posts, commenting, arguing, what have you. Something like "NCAA Football Friday 9/28: Virginia Tech 28 - Southern Carolina 19".
Just an idea.
It would be a good idea for the sports mods to know about different sports but everyone should be able to posts threads because I'm sure the mods wouldn't catch every game. if only mods were able to posts threads the place would probably die quickly.

I support the idea of a sports subforum. It's really not big enough for its own forum, but it deserves more than just a thread tag.

I was just thinking that if people make threads of their own accord, half the forum will be filled with identical threads, aside from one word changed in the title "omg da packers suk" "omg da eagles r da best" "omg football suks soccer is better"

Presuming we do get a sports forum, the mods will hand out infracs for "my team is better than yours" posts. I say let everyone start threads because that gives us control over what we want to talk about. There are so many games played daily/weekly and I doubt more than 10% of them are worth talking about.
If the admins are for it, I say give it a shot and scrap it if it doesn't work out.

I suppose you're right, nobody's going to care if Rice beats Duke in a game. Though I must say, the "my team is better than yours" posts could be possible, but obviously not in that form. You'd need to provide some sort of evidence, be it stats, off-season pick-ups, track record, etc etc. There's nothing wrong with a healthy debate over which team is better, it's when it degenerates to "Yeah well my team is better. Why? BECAUSE I LIKE THEM!1!!1!"
It would be like a debate zone (but not as boring] about sports.
It could possibly attract new members who like to argue about sports stuff.

But it wouldn't be strictly debate either, you could also post game score or news about certain teams if you wanted. More versatile than the DZ.

Not to mention much more casual and themed. I also expect pre-season prediction threads.
You know, without a sports forum around we never really talk about sports, but now that there's talk of the possibility of one it sounds like we might actually get some use out of it.
It's still Rob's decision.
We'll at the most, I think it should be a sub-forum. But it's own forum is too much, personally.

If it's a sub-forum, it's just gonna clutter the top of whatever its parent forum is. Plus, I can't think of a single one out of the four topical forums that "sports" would fall under. If it went under the GF, why wouldn't media funhouse?
It's gotta be General Forum; Media is more for entertainment-purposes, which sports is but it's not technically the same.
It's not really a general topic, it's pretty specific. This topic is too big for a subforum but it's not known if it could work as its own section.

That's what I was thinking. I think sports is an out of sight out of mind thing on Explosm, and suddenly when one person makes an NFL thread everyone wants to talk about sports. So the forum wouldn't be a waste, at the very least it can't hurt to try, and you can always fall back on a GF Sports tag if it doesn't work out.

This idea I reckon would work out really well. There would be wayyy too many double up threads if people were allowed to post threads.
Would we have to get separate sport tags though? Like AFL, SOCCER, NFL and such?
PS: I think I raised this way too late, with the AFL Grand Final on today.
My South Florida Bulls just pulled off another big win over West Virgina and I want to talk about it!
This should have a poll to see if people do really want this.

Considering a lot of people said they were interested, it didn't get many votes.
Would it be a better idea to have a sub-forum or something under the General Forum? Cause I really think the reason there aren't any sport threads is cause there's nowhere to put them.

What do you think would happen if heaps and heaps of sport threads started to appear in the General forum? Surely that would make it worse than it already is, for the people who aren't into sport.
Plus I'm pretty sure
"Team 1 vs Team 2 - Who'll win?" Would get dumped.

I have to agree. I'll say again, give it a try and see if it generates discussion, and scrap it if it doesn't work. The GF is just too broad for us to come up with anything meaningful to talk about. We need guidance, dictator forum overlords!
Oh well at least we know not that many people are interested. Would have been good to at least give it a shot as a subforum.

Not gonna happen. Not yet anyway.
