View Full Version : Prototype: THE Sandbox Game
Tempest

We really need a jaw-drop type of emoticon for things that are absolutely amazing. :aaa: just doesn't capture the kind of reaction I had when I first read about this game. First off, a little lesson on video games. A sandbox game is a game in which the world is non-linear and open-ended, such as Grand Theft Auto. There are missions, but they can (usually) be done in whatever order you wish, or even not at all, if you'd like to just walk around and bullshit. Prototype takes this idea and decides "Well, we're gonna suck a lot less than those other games." At this point in development (The projected release date is summer of 2008), the story is either pretty hush-hush, or just plain underdeveloped, but lots of details have been revealed about the gameplay.
In Prototype you play a character, Alex Mercer, who suffers from amnesia after waking up on an experiment table in an underground lab. He leaves the lab to discover that he is in New York City, which is now populated by virally mutated people. He is being hunted by the Black Watch Special Forces, and has to kill to find out more about his past. Pretty cookie-cutter so far, but the game really shines with the features that have been announced.
One of the main draws of the game is that Alex is an experiment gone, surprisingly, right. Well, for him, that is, not for his enemies. He has the power to absorb victims that he's killed, allowing him to use their memories, experiences, and even their form as his own through shapeshifting. The possibilities for this alone are endless. Imagine being presented with a building that you need to infiltrate, a skyscraper perhaps. Had you killed the foreman who assisted with the construction (which has just finished), you would have the knowledge necessary to climb through the air ducts. Or, if you wish, you could slaughter a helicopter pilot, use his knowledge to fly the chopper to the top of the building, and enter there. The possibilities, considering this game is created to its maximum potentials, are literally endless.
You can also shapeshift in different ways, modifying your arms to become deadly weapons, forming bulletproof plates in your body to deflect gunshots, or heightening your senses to make it easier to track your target. All of this makes for one hell of an open-ended experience.
Movement in the game is loosely based off Parkour (fans, rejoice!), and is mostly automatic, much in the vein of John Woo's Stranglehold. He will automatically decide how to deal with moving around, over, or under obstacles. Of course, what kind of genetic modification storyline would be complete without superhuman powers? Aside from being able to pick up a car or rip a light pole out of the ground to use as a weapon, the Prototype can also run faster than a normal car, or if you wish, run straight up the side of a building, then jump off the top of it and take little to no damage when you hit the asphalt below.
I've been following this game since I first read about it in Game Informer, and it's definitely up there with Assassin's Creed on my list of must-haves.

...modifying your arms to become deadly weapons, forming bulletproof plates in your body to deflect gunshots..
Right when I read that.. I'm in. No doubt.
Thank you, Tempest for blowing my mind. I'll get it as soon as possible.
Hopefully it's not just hype because this sounds pretty cool. This game sounds amazing with the shapeshifting creating some awesome gameplay.
It sounds like a mix of Jigsaw (Ben Affleck movie where he forgets everything and is getting hunted down by FBI or something) and that other Terminator in Terminator 2 (cause he can shape-shift and move blades out of his arms, etc..etc.)
Doesn't sound like a good combination, but turns out it looks sexy as hell.

I want this to work so badly. If they manage to make the city big enough and the graphics decent while not fucking up the gameplay, it could turn out to be better than anything we're hoping for. We know Sierra doesn't fuck around.
Edit- Holy shit it's already beautiful at 20% completion.

a synopsis usually sounds good, it's making it work that is the hard part. Hopefully it lives up to the hype. Amnesia is always a poor excuse to get rid of storyline.

Obviously the website isn't.
This game, if it works out, looks like it has the potential to be the best game ever. It seems like alot of other games that have attempted complete open-endedness outside of the (MMO)RPG genre generally fail at doing so. Just look at fable; it had potential but they half assed it.
Sounds alot like Bioshock but with a bigger map and more plasmids.

It sounds much like an expanded version of Crackdown. All these promises seem a little bit, well, difficult to accomplish, especially with the sheer diversity of the options for completing each mission. I, for one, am not going to get hyped about this, since its due out in less than 6 Months and this is the first alot of people have heard of it, I can see it being pushed back alot.

There's a disturbing amount of hyped games nowadays that tend to be not so good. There aren't that many, but there are those games that are so awesome that you get chills on your spine, and if you discover that they suck, well that's just awful. Hope this game is what it seems.

There's always the chance that that's a good thing, though. Sometimes games without much hype are the ones that do best. Of course, that could have a lot to do with the fact that we had no prior expectations anyway.

Due to the lack of info I'm expecting delays by the bucket load, due to the high level on depth to the game being promised, if they are going to do something as amazing as they say they are then they should be shouting about it
Since there hasn't been much updates on, well... anything; I'm going to assume they thought up the basic storyline and all his powers, patented it.. but never actually got too much into creating it. I'm guessing we'll see it out in 2009 at this rate.

Movement is mostly automatic, much in the vein of John Woo's Stranglehold.
Eh, not sure how that's going to be.
I saw a trailer of this on daily planet or whatever, and they were showing clips, and how realistic the sound effects are, etc. I heard they're aiming for the world record of most realistic sound effects in a game or something. When I first heard about it on TV, I was like 'meh', then they mentioned the shapeshifting with the arms and the bulletproof shields, and I was hooked.
I think it looks amazing, but I would really prefer less gun-action for the main character. Since the game focuses on his cool powers, it would really be a shame if it ended up being a mostly shooting game.

I lost alot of interest when I found out how it works.
There's a maximum of like 6 different powers, and when you want to use one you have to like- Access the power menu and select the SPIKEY HANDS power.
I'm gonna assume you unlock each power when the narrative wants you to. That'd be dumb.
And it's more like Spider-Man or Crackdown than GTA. It's made by the guys what did The Hulk:Ultimate Destruction. I wouldn't really compare it to Grand Theft Auto.

I don't think this was mentioned, but the way the storyline works is that you hunt down and absorb people right? Well some of these people are actually important, and they're memories reveal a part of your past. Each time you absorb one of these key people, they're memories are added to a large web of memories, revealing other possible targets and such, but you can essentially do the web in whatever order you want. I think.
This is based off the article in GI from like a year ago.

Didn't look that great. Sure, killing people and becoming them is neat but it was done well enough in the game Messiah. And rampaging is also fun... for a little while. Im skeptical about this game. I have read that it gets extremely repetitive after 3-4 hours. I think though that if it would have come out before inFamous it would have done better. Though the 360 sales might make it seem relatively successful. But I dont see a bunch of PS3 owners running out to get a game that more than likely is nowhere near as good as inFamous. I might rent this one, not worth buying in my opinion.

You are more than likely right. Like I said Im not getting my hopes up for this game. I know its a sandbox game but I like my games where your choices influence the people and the city around you. Prototype looks to focus on mindless killing and killing. I just hope it is not as repetitive as I have read. I know my friend is going to get it first thing tomorrow so I might watch the first couple of missions before I totally say "No way this game blows." Course we need some good games until August and November get here so hopefully it will be a solid game.

So far after playing it for 6 hours it's gotten somewhat tedious; although i could be from the fact that we've been playing i for 6 hours straight. It's a fun game and the plot really isn't half bad; in fact, I like it quite a bit. I suggest this as I did AC; very innovative game, but it gets tedious. I would suggest a rent, but the game's pretty good and the story looks like it'll take a bit some maybe a buy.

Both of you are fucking retarded. The person playing was mindlessly killing people, because he could. That doesn't mean that's the only point of the game. You're not going to buy it simply because it gives you the option to destroy shit? Jesus fuck you're either the most retarded people in the world, or inFamous fanboys.

Gameplay video right here. I can't get this until tomorrow since I'm getting it from Steam, but it looks pretty fun. People have been comparing it to The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, but it still looks badass.

That was the equivalent to GTA killing sprees, and we all know that that was the only thing you could do in that game, and how boring and stupid it was.
Ok I do not like the way this game looks so I MUST be retarded... Makes sense. Im not going to BUY this game because its not worth 60 bucks. Especially after seeing my friend play. I was bored after an hour. It has average graphics though the main character's model is ok. But not worth 60 bucks though. I am having a hard time shelling out the 6-7 dollars to even RENT this game.

...Good sweet jesus, this game is amazing. It's perfect in every sense of the word.
It's like the best parts of Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Bioshock, Grand Theft Auto, and Spider-Man put together. The story's pretty decent, the combat is absolutely -visceral-. It puts God of War, Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword...all of them to shame.
Balancing out your attack and defense powers, switching to them mid-flight, maneuvering around to find the best positioning, it's an action game junkie's PARADISE.
Seriously, this game is stupid-crazy-good.

No, bitching about how the game is all about mindless killing, based on one video that features the ability to mindless kill stuff is retarded. And you watched someone play, not nearly as fun as playing it, added to the fact that you already had negative feelings with it, you were probably convincing yourself it was boring for an hour.
And stop complaining about graphics, they're decent, just because it doesn't have Crysis-like prettiness smeared onto the walls doesn't mean the gameplay is bad.

Well I finally rented the game and I must say I stand by my originial statements and I am still just as bored as I was when I was watching the game. So I gave the game a shot and found it to ok but not worth it. Meaning if I am going to spend 60 bucks on something it better be worth it. Plus its WAY to choatic in some parts. I love how ridiculous the high-speed combat is, through. You just plow through shit when you're sprinting - people, cars, telephone poles. One of my very favorite things to do, though, is to snatch people. I sprint through a squad of troops, grab one of them on the way, immediately run up to a rooftop and then just throw the fucker as far as I can. They made throwing people way too funny in this game.

Just beat the game, sad to say I did predict the ending after about the 27th mission (out of 31) HUGE SPOILER ALERT When you go into Infected view and see that Cross isn't orange like the rest of the military, but grey like a Hunter.
You guys must either be at lower missions or HATE using aircraft if you don't use Whipfist. Or maybe you didnt get the upgrade yet that lets you snag onto people and vehicles with it. Nothing more satisfying than taking out a strike team by hijacking all of their choppers in succession. Hijack, bail, glide to the next, grab on, wash, rinse, repeat. It's really useful for getting WOI targets as well in crowded areas. All in all, I use Claws/Armor in combat, Whipfist/Shield while moving. I never use the Blade, and only use Hammerfist and Musclemass on occasion. And I turned Thermal Vision on once to see what it looked like. I used Infected Vision a LOT, mainly to make sure I got my 'Nice Guy' achievement, I won't bother second time through.
One thing I really hate though. Hint bubbles, or whatever. They are pointless, I don't want a collectible tutorial scattered across New York.

As for the Whipfist, I only use it for one thing: Sniping Infected Towers for shitloads of free EP. I don't like it in combat. The Blade has higher single target damage, and I can do perfectly good AoE with Air Stomp, Knuckle Shockwave, and Groundshatter.
Matter of preference, I guess. I also never EVER use armor, I dislike it. I just use the shield and juggle.

Never use it to clear a street of infected when low on health to fill it halfway? Works like a charm on little shits. Clears out military bases nice too. And I couldn't have beat either of the 2 larger bosses without armor, even on Easy. I personally find Knuckle Shockwave pointless.

I hate sacrificing gliding for armor. During the Supreme Hunter boss fight, whenever I got low on health I'd just glide around the edge of the area until I'd regenerated enough to get back in there.
The first time you fight Supersoldiers was pretty frustrating at the third stage (where you fight four of 'em at once). I ended up just using the tendril devastator as soon as that part started, killed everything except a few troops that were out of range.

Ugh. I found my first beef with this game's story.
I'm having trouble connecting to Alex as a protagonist, or at all. It became super-obvious that the story lacks impact when it's revealed that Alex is a living virus, and not a person. I was just like "Okay, whatever." The game makes no attempt to humanize him in the first place, detracting from the ability to give plot twists any significant meaning.
I understand that they were trying to go for an anti-hero thing, but that doesn't work when the main character's as thin as paper.

I um.. acquired this game and started playing it, and it's pretty fucking awesome. It's not what I thought it was gonna be when I first made this thread, but I don't see why everyone is giving it a bad rap either. It's nothing like inFAMOUS, so everyone comparing the two and saying inFAMOUS is better is a moron. It's a free-roamer with super powers, and that's where the similarities stop.
I'm only a little bit through the story so far, just absorbed the Agent and now I have to go find Elizabeth Greene, but I'm having fun. Running up a building, leaping off it, and delivering a massive elbow drop to a taxi 50 stories below is fucking epic.

I did that fight with the shield. I actually like it better than armor, since it completely absorbs damage while the armor just reduces damage.
The end of that fight was kind of funny. I was expecting something dramatic, but then he just grabbed the little girl and beat the shit out of her. It looked like he was raping her.

I could list all the shit I love, but like the popular media I'd rather just list the shit I didn't.
1) The city is infected, there are red zones FILLED with infected humans and those beastly Hungers running around, the military are blowing the shit out of anything that moves. So why, why, WHY, are people still walking and driving around the city in their droves???? I mean if this terrifying virus had broken out and people were being massacred left right and centre would you go for a walk in the city? I'd be too busy hiding in my closet shitting myself.
2) Those fucking sensors, I keep dashing up to them and because I know its a tight time limit before they go off, I hit Y too early and end up slamming my knee into them instead of hacking them. This does not end well.
3) A certain someone gets kidnapped, and I don't give two shits. They didn't really make me care.
4) Sometimes on my mini-map I'll see a target W.O.I person and before I get to them they dissappear? I dunno why. I've also accidentally killed a couple of them, does anyone know if they respawn or is that that them dead.
Overall though I like the game, the enemies are so well paced. You've got your infected who you can just slaughter in droves, the military who are a fucking pain with their weapons but die easy enough. And then you have the tougher stuff like the vehicles and the hunters. I'd say more but I dont know how to do that blacking out thing and I'd hate to spoil anything for anyone D:

You've got your infected who you can just slaughter in droves, the military who are a fucking pain with their weapons but die easy enough. And then you have the tougher stuff like the vehicles and the hunters. I'd say more but I dont know how to do that blacking out thing and I'd hate to spoil anything for anyone D:
Also: fucking epic cutscenes.
Just wanted to mention that the W.O.I. targets do respawn, you just have to roam around the area again later on.
I too enjoyed the game, but I played the crap out of it, got all of my upgrades and consumed all of the W.O.I. targets and got all of that precious storyline I love. The game had quite a bit lacking though, and I guess it makes sense for what you are: pretty much a Demigod roaming the streets with absolutely no care in the world. I did like what the game had, but there were two things that really bothered me.
1) The random difficulty jump. I don't know about you guys, but I was happily playing this game blowing shit out of the way and making blood rain throughout the town, but then half way through the game the difficulty just shot up and I died or was so close to death that it took me quite a long time to do missions because I had to escape and consume so much to keep my health up.
2) The story. The W.O.I. was a beautiful creation, the major reason I played the game other than watching all of the blood rain from the sky as tanks blew up in the background and helicopters crashed on hives and blew up everything. The story telling of the infection and what was going on was awesome, but the actual story that the game forced you to watch wasn't too great at all. The story just let me advance from point to point with no real connection to anything, and the game just didn't have any feeling. I mean, there's the problem where SPOILER:Dana gets taken by the hunter thing or whatever that's a pain in the balls, and then you rescue her, take her to Dr. Something and you never see or about either of them. You've been with them for the majority of the game, and they just go away, no telling of anything.
Also, I have to agree that the cut scenes were awesome. In the beginning cut scene that most people have seen I enjoyed watching that one soldier get sliced open and actually being able to see his stomach and intestines ripped in half down his body. Sadly, seeing something like that gave me false hopes, and now I wish I could disembowel everything.

Yeah and no replay possibility for bosses,
and those fucking stupid parkour-events.
Hard had me screaming "FUCK" for atleast two hours, so far.

It has the steepest difficulty curve I've seen, I'll give it that. It's still a fun game.

If anyone bothered to get Bulletdive Drop then you'll know it's the coolest ability ever.

I played it, and got bored of it quickly. The missions are less than exciting, and all I was doing was killing the same people over and over again. I don't see what is so great about it.

It may seem boring but when you're late in the game the military goes all out and there's more infection, and the upgrades make things cool.
