It's been complained about in various threads so I thought I'd make one just for this issue. We should be able to use BBCode and smileys in our sigs again. I just tried to update my sig and it said it could only be 50 characters long, that rule also needs to go.
Admins, if you don't want to change it back, please explain why not.

Yeah, I'm only allowed one sentence, no BBCode, no quotes, and no images. What's with that?

Every time I try to quote someone it wont let me. I think the whole 50 characters should go.

We should be allowed:
Quotes
Images
BBCode
No 50 Word Restriction

something like 85 would be nice.
Well, I agree with the no 50 word limit, that prevents people from using certain things in their sig, which makes it hard.
However, seeing someone with 6 quotes in their sig would just get annoying.

The signatures should be limited to two quotes or maybe 100 characters (including smileys). I think 100 is more than enough and the two signature limit (if it is possible to do that) would allow people to use quotes but avoid the 6 quotes problem.
how about limiting it to a number of pixels, like 200px high
Everyones sig possibly this tall?

If there is a way to disable others from seeing them then sure, otherwise I and I'm sure other aren't fond of big ass sigs.

God no. I used to browse forums where idiots had these ENORMOUS sigs, piled high at the bottom of their post like a goddamn art gallery. It's really irritating when a one or two-line post is suddenly dominated by a whole mess of HEY HEY HEY EVERYONE LOOK AT MY SIG bullshit.
We use the forum to discuss things, not to show off our fucking signatures. I, for one, like the current dimensions as they are.

Signatures should be expanded a little. Not too much, just more than right now.
Here's what happened.
Quotes are annoying because they interrupt the flow of the thread and are only used for stupid circle-jerking purposes.
I tried to turn them off in sigs, but for some reason it's not working and it's messing with other features. I'm trying to work out the kinks.
Eventually, you'll only be able to use images and plain text in sigs.
Im down with that. I only got one cause the other one I had wasn't working.

I agree with 100 character limit, 2 quotes limit, and the current size for pictures. 100 characters should sufficiently hold two quotes. And you don't want some massive picture either, or multiple massive pictures.

I think the height limit for images in sigs should be upped just a little bit.. Maybe like 70 instead of 50, or if you're feeling generous, 100. A lot of stuff I want to put in my sig just doesn't come out right at 50 pixels high, it's either too small to see some of the detail needed, or it pixelates too much.
RabidMonkey
10-05-2007, 4:03 AM
My sig comes from a 8000x8000 pixel image :indiff: The details are pretty good, but on the original, the details make it look like a real planet. So I don't really know what you're complaining about being pixelated?

I understand the circle jerking problem, but if I want to sig a quote that's actually funny like this one...
I'm not putting a dong on the main forums page.
...I'll be called a suck-up. It's too bad you can't infrac for unfunny circle jerks in sigs. Or can you?

I think we still need more than 100 characters. Maybe 150? Also, It doesn't really matter if quote tags are disabled or not. You can just put "Username: Quote text."

I think that links shouldn't be counted towards the character count, like it used to be. 50 character limit isn't a problem, but not being able to link an image or page because the URL is too long is kinda retarded.

Yeah, I've always thought that too. You can resort to using tinyurl though.

I've seen forums having scroll bars in the signature place. You could just scroll your way around, and it didn't interupt anything.

Some forums have special spoiler tags, where a whole block of text is not only hidden but is completely compressed and stuffed behind a little "spoiler" button, so that it takes up no room on the table. Clicking the button makes the text spawn wherever the spoiler tag is. People on those forums often use this in their signature, so they can keep enormous images and quotes there without cluttering the page and to keep posts small and legible.
That's probably the best system, actually. Anyone who really wants to see their sig can click the spoiler button, and anyone who doesn't won't get distracted by huge sigs.

Imo, the signature image restrictions are good the way they are. Or maximum 500x100.
Matterialize

Assassin, the spoiler-tag method is just for hiding ridiculously huge sigs or lots of quotes. People could still post images directly to their sig, if they were within reasonable size limits.
MistyTehMoose
10-10-2007, 7:43 AM
As long as they are not ridiculously huge, then I don't see why the character limit can't be changed. As far as I see it, the character limit isn't the problem, but the size of images that some people put in their sig. I think that should be restricted, instead.

I thought of the Student Room first when he mentioned spoilers as well.
I genuinely believe they'll help a lot. You can fit a load of shit in a spoiler, and it's up to the user to click on it or not (though it's annoying when people think they're original by embedding an infinite amount of spoilers within spoilers).

Hiding sigs is a bad idea because slack mods like myself, who will never click to see someone's sig, won't be able to tell if there's any goatse-type images there.
However, I think the 50-character limit should change. I tried changing my sig today using the normal user-cp and a Photobucket URL won't fit in the limit. My picture only had 3 letters in the file name.

I suggest tinypic.com for images, it shortens the URL to almost the perfect length. However, I agree that it needs to change.

Good point. I suppose a report system might not be effective, because they could just edit their sig to remove the link...
But then again, people can edit offensive content out of their posts too. Perhaps in addition to the report-post button, a user could have a "report user" button in their profile. Offensive sigs could be included in that.

There are more than 50 characters in quite a few signature pictures filenames when you upload them somewhere. Also you can't add more than a sentence of text.

Probably long after considering how old you are.
No progress on signatures. Still can't get VBulletin to allow IMG code but not FONT and SIZE, which get abused way too much.
One idea is to not show signatures on posts by default, but have a checkbox that lets you show yours if you want. The opposite of what we have now.
Mirrorman
10-21-2007, 3:31 AM
Actually I think that it really doesn't need the IMG code thing. I uploaded mine from my desktop and it works just fine.

If you do that, you should definitely change how big the images can be on upload. Currently, the actual upload option restricts it to something like 9kbs. Not enough, at all. :indiff:
I've been having lots of problems with doing a signature. It basically won't allow anything unless it's 50 characters of plain text or less. :indiff:
I'm all for upping the character limit. Oh, and as matterialize said, if you disallowed any and all BBC, people would just be hosting images from your server, which wouldn't bode well for the speed of things around here I assume.
Mirrorman

Is there a way to limit overall signature dimensions in pixels? E.g. all sigs must fit in a 500x100 box or something.
Also, what's wrong with color and size tags? Or VBcode in general, for that matter? (read: I'm new here and don't know what people did to get that stuff banned)
