I'm looking to find some new bands to listen to as I'm getting a bit bored with my current music. I'm mainly into hardcore/NY metal (eg Hatebreed) but I'll give any kind of metal a once over.
And if anyone suggests anything remotely emo... I'll... err... be unhappy. REALLY unhappy. So just try it. But seriously, please gimme a few bands I can check out. Cheers!

Go to the media forum!
Shit sorry. Thought I was in the media forum, not the general. Any chance one of you mod-type people could shift it to the media one please? Thanks.
EDIT:
MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE.
Thanks for suggesting my most hated band in the history of the entire world ever! I have no words for how much they inspire me to hate.
And if anyone suggests anything remotely emo... I'll... err... be unhappy. REALLY unhappy.
lool, emo fag.
but seriously, check out thrash metal. Easily the coolest form of metal. Here's some bands to whet your appetite;
Overkill
Testament
Vio-Lence
Exodus
Slayer
Annihilator
(very old) Metallica
(very old) Megadeth
(very old) Anthrax
Kreator
Municipal Waste

Hardcore fucking sucks. Anything ending with core is NOT associated with metal. Except grindcore, ofcourse.
Well, since your style is core I'd go with some metalcore bands.
Trivium
Bullet For My Valentine (post hardcore)
Still Remains
All That Remains
Parkway Drive
Killswitch Engage
Underoath
As I Lay Dying
Diecast
Avenged Sevenfold (ish)
Melo-death:
In Flames
Dark Tranquility
Amon Amarth
Children of Bodom (ish)
Arch Enemy
Unearth
EDIT: DEATH METAL WOOHOO
Cannibal Corpse
Deicide
Aeon
Dying Fetus
Cryptopsy
GOREGRIND
Mortician
Last Days of Humanity
Exhumed
Cock and Ball Torture
Cliteater
GRINDCORE
Fuck... I'm Dead
Anal Cunt
Excrementory Grindfuckers (really funny band haha)
Pig Destroyer
Cattle Decapitation
etc.
DamnDude

Kenneh said it all. but may I tell you to stay away from Avenged Sevenfold (except one song, batcountry or something), and add those bands:
Opeth (Progressive metal, very cool)
Novembre (Progressive, Avant Garde metal some say)
Non-Human Level (The thrasiest metal you'll find, its insane, but the best band EVER though)
Darkane (Melodic death)
Sikth (Musical experience, not sure what they fit under, progressive or something, very good songs though)
And finally:
EDGE OF SANITY!!!!! (Insane melodic death metal, Dan Swanö is the king of them all!)

Waking the Fallen (album) is good in my opinion but it shouldn't be classed as metalcore.

08-19-2007, 10:47 PM
Definitly check out Cannibal Corpse, they're from New York as well. Old Sepultura is fucking crazy, one of the best early Thrash Metal bands.
Also
Cattle Decapitation
Anal Cunt
Slayer (Namely, God Hates Us All)
Job For A Cowboy
Mayhem
Burzum
Deicide
Necrophagist
Amon Amarth
Brujeria
Asesino
Chimaira
Goatwhore
Ill Nino
If you end up liking Sepultura, you might also like Soulfly, but Soulfly experiments with alot of different styles, but it's mostly metal.
Meshuggah is also a good band. Alot of people say they don't like them because they sound unorganized, but I think they really create a nice sound.
Mudvayne isn't really considered a metal band, but they're drummer and bassist are insane.
OH, and if you like really crazy drumming, check out Mastodon, namely the Leviathan album.
DamnDude
08-19-2007, 10:57 PM
Ohh shit, I forgot about Meshuggah, yeah, definatly check them out, they have some crazy songs even if Catch 33 was over the top (it was good and all, but seriously, no point in making an album that is unplayable on concerts).
In my opinion, Burzum sucks, its like a garage band that just got instruments to play on and the only reason Varg is famous is because of his connections with Mayhem and he burned Christian churches down and shiat.
Necrophagist are awesome if you want fast and angry metal with INSANE solos, check then out dude.
TheHighwaySong
08-19-2007, 11:04 PM
Yeeeah I should've added that Burzum isn't much of a band. It's a one man deal. But it's almost quite similar to Mayhem, just more electronic I guess?

Amon Amarth is my favorite metal band right now. Amputated is good if do not want to know what they're saying and abuse towards women. Then there's always the classics, like Slayer and Anthrax.

Good start, thanks guys. Fair number of bands I haven't even heard of there, but also a lot of bands I love and have seen live like Unearth (3 times), Soulfly, Sepultura, Lamb of God, Slayer, Killswitch Engage, Megadeth, Metallica (twice), In Flames etc. Still though, keep 'em coming and if anyone wants any from me just let me know and I'll be only too happy to return the favour. I have over 10gig of metal on my comp so bound to have something!

I'm from NY and tell you the truth, there is not much of a metal scene over here. I don't know if that's a name you used over in Great Britain, but there's not a lot of good metal bands around NYC except for Suffocation, Type O Negative, and Madball (originally hardcore, but now metalcore.)
As for highly recommended bands....
Sigh (awesome, AWESOME Japanese avant-garde metal)
Iced Earth
Dark Tranquillity
Devin Townsend Band
Strapping Young Lad
Death (no self-respecting metalhead can go living without listening to them)
Sodom (kick-ass German thrash)
Scar Symmetry
Suffocation
Trail Of Tears
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter (Probably the best German-speaking metal band ever)
TheHighwaySong
08-20-2007, 8:18 PM
Oh yeah! SYL of course! And I was gonna mention Die Apokalyptischen Reiter as well, but I wasn't sure if you'd be open to metal of different languages as well. Both bands are awesome. And why not open yourself up to some Rammstein as well? It's nothing really fast, but they sure do put out some heavy stuff.

I don't think DevilDriver is really metalcore.
Static-X is cool if you like metal with bits of techno. They're newest album is awesome, it goes back to the roots of the first album.
The Agony Scene can be considered metalcore, although they do have a distinct sound to a softer Lamb of God.
And what's some fucking metal without some good ol' GWAR :]
If you don't like emo/screamo pussy shit, you should probably stay away from Math Metal. It's a shame that it has metal in the title. It's just incoherent yelling, stupid basslines, offbeat drumming, but incredible guitar work. If you wanna check out an actual decent Math Metal band, check out The Dillinger Escape Plan.
Caliban is also another great German thrash metal band.
Deftones are also another one of those experimental bands that are worth checking out. Granted, most of their stuff is pretty ambient sounding, they can really pound out some heavy stuff.

Hahaha GWAR are awesome cuz they're so ridiculous. As for Caliban, I'm going to see them in October with Soilwork, Chimaira and Sonic Syndicate. Should be a good night!

I saw Chimaira and GWAR on the same night on Sounds of the Underground. Once you've seen GWAR once, you're hooked for life. I'll be seeing them again August 17th with Cradle of Filth.

I'd love to see GWAR. They rock. All I need to say to support that is "Fucking an animal, not proud of what I do fucking an animal. Had a great time at the zoo." Quality lyrics, say I.
As for Cradle of Filth, good luck with that. I saw them last year and they were truly awful, although they had a woman dressed in metal who took a chainsaw to her pussy in a shower of sparks which was slightly entertaining. Other than that, they were complete shite.

Shadows Fall
Refused (more Hardcore/Post-Hardcore)
Vanna (slightly more 'screamo' but their new album is worth a listen)
I'd especially recommend the Refused song New Noise.
And if you're into foreign music check out Dir en Grey. Great Japanese band.

I hate to break it to you, but most of your info is false. By no means is Caliban thrash metal, they're metalcore. If you want German thrash metal, then listen to Sodom and Dew-Scented.
Deftones are not experimental. I don't have the exact genre for Deftones as of this moment, but I definitely would not call them experimental. Experimental would more be like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Giant Squid.
There's no such thing as "Math Metal" because that's just a made up name. The way you're describing math metal almost sounds more like bands like Converge and Martyr A.D. who fit into the category of metalcore. As for Dillinger, they would actually fit into the "experimental metal" category.
Also, I really have to disagree about The Agony Scene being a "softer Lamb Of God". Lamb Of God is more "groove metal" just as Devildriver would fit that bill while The Agony Scene is flat-out metalcore like Unearth and Darkest Hour.
I'm not trying to flame ya, but I felt it's necessary to straighten your stuff out.

Hey, just a heads-up - it's cool if you like Hardcore and Metalcore, but try to get out of the "core" phase as soon as possible. Most Metal fans don't regard those genres as actual Metal, and it'd be good to start moving into the real Metal music, so you can see what you're missing. These bands may have already been listed, but I haven't read all the responses:
Death Metal:
Death
Morbid Angel
Cannibal Corpse
The Berzerker
Deathspell Omega (Black/Death)
Black Metal:
Carpathian Forest
Darkthrone
Taake
Xasthur
Nargaroth
Thrash Metal:
Kreator
Sodom
Testament
Municipal Waste
Voivod
Power/Prog Metal:
Kamelot
Dream Theater
Falconer
Pain of Salvation
Fates Warning
Doom Metal:
Tiamat
My Dying Bride
Sunn 0)))
Novembers Doom
Cathedral
This should be enough for now - 5 bands from a variety of genres. If you like any of it, feel free to toss a PM or something.

Whoa! Change thread title to "my whole playlist".
I don't like today's NY hardcore it drifted away from the original hardcore scene which was quite good. Check out these thrash/crossover bands, they could be to your liking as the hardcore punk influences are evident.
Agnostic Front - Cause For Alarm (a must)
Cro-Mags - The Age Of Quarrel
M.O.D. - U.S.A. for M.O.D.
Storm Troopers of Death - Speak English or Die (an Anthrax side project collaboration with M.O.D. vocalist)
As for other metal recommendations I say go for some good ol thrash.
Here are some good bands to add to the essential thrash list presented by dave:
Sodom (mentioned earlier)
Sabbat - Dreamweaver (UK's finest thrash band)
Agent Steel - Unstoppable force
Possessed - Seven Churches (hailed as death metal but truth is they only paved the way for death metal, this is fine heavy thrash)
Destruction - Infernal Overkill (German thrash kings)
Tankard - Zombie Attack
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
Deathrow - Riders Of Doom (Satan's Gift)
If you liked these bands you will eventually discover other brilliant thrash projects by yourself.

Does anyone listen to industrial music/slash Metal? I'm really into Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Throbbing Gristle, Ministry, Foetus, Ogher and stuff like that. Don't get me wrong, I like Metal a lot it's just a different branch. I'm also a bit disappointed at the lack of Slayer in this thread.
