Iron and Wine – The Shepherd’s Dog

Genre – Beardcore / Folk

It looks like the hush mellow sound of Iron and Wine is no more, as Sam Bean shows he isn’t just about southern finger picking and tender lo-fi verses. Even his song arrangements have ventured into a whole new gulf; with such influences from dub, blues, and West African music, although his lyricism is still unrivalled and pure as ever. The Layering of his voice on several songs; creates a rich texture, whilst experimenting further with transitions and interstitial passages that help the album to flow nicely. I'm still in my mid stage of listening to it over and over, but so far 3.5/5

When I first heard it was going to be a new sounding Iron & Wine, I was a bit concerned, but after buying the album and listening to it over a few times, I have to say I was rather impressed. I'd give it a 3.8 out of 5.

By the way his name is Sam Beam.

I was actually very impressed, and found it to be more of a true, consistent feel and vibe then some his previous stuff. I haven't really put aside time to listen and appreciate the entire c.d yet, but I really do love it so far. I do confess it takes some time to grow on you, but once it does you find it is definitely Iron & Wine at his best. The Devil Never Sleeps is definitely my favorite song, and is one of my favorite Iron & Wine songs. This album nails the feeling of a rustic country farm with a sort of lazy love that is completely natural to Sam Beam.

4.5/5

Note: Try giving Iron & Wine a listen on vinyl. It sounds so different to me :)
