View Full Version : Portal
So it's getting released on Wednesday to those who bought orange box. I myself have it pre-loaded and will play it before Hl2:E2
Although when I watched the video, it almost made me sick. Seems like an awesome basis for a game and I can't wait to play it.
What are your thoughts on it, and do you think they will come out with some multiplayer mods one day ?

Woah, its coming out this wednesday? I thought it wasnt out until November or something. Are you able to buy the game just by itself? Because I don't plan on buying Half Life.

Link to the video? I remember seeing some sort of 'Portal' Video a long time ago, and I loved it, but I didn't know what it was or if it was real...
That and the other game would be the only reason I get 'The Orange Box'. I don't care too much for Half-Life.

The video was like set as an instructional video, and you just have to search portal on steam videos.

I think I still have ND installed.
I, too, bought the orange box for three reasons: TF2, Episode 2, and Portal. I'm so psyched for this. I think multiplayer might be a little difficult, though.

Yeah. The transition between portals seems to be 100% seamless in the videos. I'm impressed.

That thing was alright, but it was really crude. =/ I'm pretty sure it was just a gun that shot two teleport locations, not portals in the sense of the new game. You could shoot rockets and stuff through them, though. That was fun.
We already know Portal's story (if there is one) involves some research subject doing tests for this Aperture company. I'm wondering if there's anything beyond puzzle-solving. Will he escape from the Aperture complex and use his fancy portal gun to go after the top executives? Or does he just go back into confinement at the end?

Most of the reviews from the past month are from the game itself. Dontdrop is right, it's more puzzle than FPS.
In fact, the only real violence involved in Portal is knocking over some sentry turrets. The storyline is pretty much a giant training session at the portal gun factory.
I think it's a nice change of pace for Valve games/mods.

I really expect this to be a more of a preview to an upcoming game. I hope I'm right. Half-life 2 had the gravity gun. So Half-Life 3? With the portal gun?

I'm not entierly sure about the Half-Life 3 part. I think my brother said something about there not being a Half-Life 3 because you meet G-Man in episode 3 and the series ends at that? I would ask him but he's away on camp until friday.
Although it would be nice to have a portal gun lying around I dont think we will be seeing much more of it unless they realease portals 2 or some third party mods come out, then again I think it will be a common sight for all Garry's Mod player's eventually when the "mingebags" have nothing better to do.

Less than 2 hours to go.
Valve seem to jump around a bit on news about HL3, but at the moment it seems like Episode 3 will be the last HL installment.
There is, apparently, no blue gravity gun in ep2 or 3 (valve said it was too hard to make it so the player couldn't break the game), so the portal gun might be in 2 or 3. I think 3 is more likely, because they probably would have advertised it already if it was in EP2, since the idea of a portal gun is obviously popular.
Apparently you don't learn anything about the Apature company in portal but rather learn all about it in Episode 2.

I've heard that Aperture is a rival of Black Mesa, and that either ep2 or 3 includes the Borealis, which is one of their ships, cut from the HL2 beta.
Fairly minor spoilers.

*Spoilers for Episode 3 and Portal*
There is a good chance the Portal gun appears in HL2:Ep3 because Gordon and Alyx travel to the Arctic to an Out-Of-Action Apature Science lab with a s**t-load of advanced technology. It's a race against the Combine. Half of the human race is screaming "Use the technology against the Combine" and the other half is shouting "Destroy it before the Combine get their hands on it". It all comes down to Gordon. And if the whole "I'm still alive" bit from the end of Portal is anything to go by the computer might have said "I'm going to be in Episode 3 =]"
I read that somewhere on the internet. I'm pretty sure its accurate.
Personally I'd rather see the computer (and the companion cube) make it into HL rather than the Portal gun

If I am thinking of the right part, you have to make a portal that will go from where the bot is shooting you, and end up hitting the glass which will break from the missile.
A fantastic game overall, even considering the fact that it was pretty short. Oh and, the place where you have to use the rocket machine thingie, I was stuck there the longest. Also what is everyone's obsession with the Companion Cube thing?

Cause it's a cube.. and it shows companionship. Duh. :ahe:
Side Note- How much does Orange Box cost, and can you just go to like Game Spot and bought it?
When you get to it, you shall know. Now shutup and play the damn game! HEYAAH!

it cost 60 dollars and you can go to any store that sells 360 games to buy it.

And $50 for pc, though I think you can buy each of the games separately for pc (off of steam though).

You're far better off buying the games together as the Box. Then you're only paying 10 bucks per game.

I beat it today. I still have no clue what people's obsession with the weighted companion cube is, because all it was was a box for a single level. Honestly it was nothing different from any other box.
But other than that great game.
Stop pooping on our fun, BMP.
You just don't understand the cube like we do. :frown:
Finished it today aswell. Great game, havent tried the advanced yet though.
I seriously thought the game was over when the platform was descending into the fire and I was like 'what the fuck? waste of time" but then I saw the platform above and seriously, there was plenty of time to shoot your portals
The last stage was epicly long in my opinion.

I like to think of the last "level" as multiple levels, dude. Think about it: They couldnt've shown that you get to escape from the main complex and explore the behind-the-scenes areas of the Enrichment Center in the Chapter Selection menu, because that would've been an instant spoiler. So, instead of just dividing it into additional chapters, they just stuck everything at the end into the "Test Chamber 19" chapter.
I see what you mean, That makes perfect sense. But still, it was rather large.
Id have to say my most fun part to manouver was the bit where the rocket missile launcher thing was in the glass and you had to shoot the glass to get to the next bit, then shoot a portal and get the missle to shoot through the portal to break more glass. What really made me like that bit (and myself for comprehending it) was using the missle to break the WCC tube and allow a cube to fall out. Fucking great section.

I actually ended up doing that completely by accident. I was just randomly left-clicking all over the room, but I forgot that I had left the yellow portal open in the room with the rocket turret. Suddenly, a rocket just comes flying out of the blue portal and slams into the tube.
Really? I was just experimenting and it worked :)
Oh, and to the Cube fans, I started a mini comic series in the Fan Art thread. I have ideas so Ill make more if it is liked.

I just finished it with the comentry, man I cannot believe they took out some of the senturys off the level with them all on different levels, apparently there where hundreds with some falling from the sky and all, It was one of the main boss levels but they took them all out :'(

^ Gasp! That sucks! Sentrys rule!
Normally I'm not an FPS gamer, but the fact that portal had a lot more thinking and platforming involved made it a very attractive game.
Too bad it's so short though. Not to mention the fact that the last boss was really predictable and easy :/.

I finished it with the commentary as well, I think it definitely added a lot to the experience. There were some levels where I was just like "Why the fuck did they put this here?", and they pretty much addressed all the questions I had. I also liked the commentary system they had, with the speech bubbles, though I found it annoying during levels where the AI is constantly speaking (i.e. the negative reinforcement level).

I woke up this morning, went to the kitchen and saw a blank piece of paper. I thought I'd creep my parents out and write, "The Cake is a Lie..." over and over on it.
It worked.
I accidently deleted portal. So I re-installed it and finished it again in 1 hour and 30 mins. Anyone done quicker?

I haven't re-played it. To be honest, It's a great game, but the replayability is a little limited. Unless there are multiple ways of doing the puzzles... Perhaps I will go through it again.

On some of the levels there are different ways you can do what you need to do.
I've played it three times. and I might play it again in a week or so.

I replayed it last night with the commentary, which was shit.
I expected it to be more interesting than just telling me about them rendering portals.
I like how on some levels you can just fling yourself to the end without doing the puzzles, the commentary told me that at least.

I'd never replay it either. That's the problem with puzzle games in general. Or, well, if you're like me where any game that doesn't attempt to rape your brain or technique & skill is automatically boring.
The advanced chambers were great fun though. I wish they made advanced chambers for all of the test chambers... that would have been awesome.

I havent done it yet but i guess you use portals to extend your jump over a long distance and avoid hitting the floor.
Edit: Have any custom maps been made by anyone yet?

You mean level 19? The room with that slippery stuff on the bottom, and then all those doors open up at once to reveal about 6 or 7 Sentrys?
That was pretty easy. I didn't have to use more than 4 portals to get enough momentum to get that far.
Though, I just watched a video and this guy was trying to jump far over and over again on that level but messed up and the video ended.

Has anyone reached terminal velocity? Because I put a portal above and below me and fell for about 5 minutes and I guess that does not count for 30k feet. I liked the last boss, I don't care that it was easy, Chamber 19 to the boss was hard enough, after a simple beginning. Plus the computer is so funny it makes up for the simplicity. Spoiler*: I also thought it was cool how at the end you see the cake, and then the computer wakes up with a bunch of different eyes:*End Spoiler.

That's how you do it, you probably stopped just a little bit early. I did it at the beginning of Chamber 18, where you're in the really tall building, and it took about 6, 7 minutes to get Terminal Velocity.

You have to fall a LOT. I set up the portals and minimized Portal for 10 or so minutes. When I came back, I had the achievement. I don't know when I got it, but I would assume it was near 7 or 8.

Sorry, bumping again.
Just got done beating Portal in one sitting. I personally don't have the game, but a friend brought it over. He says he beat the game, but he used the Portal Anywhere cheat (ruins the game if you ask me). So I played, I conquered, I came. It was awesome on every level except the length. It's even hard to find out what's better: the game itself or the ending song. I came to my computer immediately afterward and downloaded it.
I would give the game 8/10 just because of the shortness, but otherwise 10.
Oh, and it would be absolutely awesome if they put the portal gun in Half Life 3 (if there will be one).

Chances are really likely to have the Portal Gun in Half Life 2 Episode 3 not only due to the popularity of Portal already, but the fact that the characters mentioned Apature Science near the end of HF2:E2.
But if that is the case the puzzles in Episode 3 will be much more in depth.

My cousin is coming over Monday with the Orange Box. I am going to play through Portal on it with the 360 and maybe get the very few achievements for it.
The Orange Box comes with the original Half-Life 2 right? Anyone know where to find the first Half-Life? We really want to play through the first one and maybe jump on the gravy train of Half-Life.

Yes, the Orange Box contains Half Life 2, Half Life 2: Episode 1, Half Life 2: Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress on one Disc.
That only came out for Ps2 and PC, it was cancelled weeks before its Dreamcast release. I think you can pick up the latest Half Life version (Source) for about $10 off the Steam Marketplace. But I'm unsure if Half Life:Source will run the 2 Expansions; Opposing Force and Blue Shift. Either way the original Half Life and Half Life:Source are both available pretty cheap on Steam.

The Portal Gun WILL be in Episode 3. Portal was a game that they created to kind of introduce the gun outside of Episode 3, so they didn't have to make a huge tutorial in the game itself. Think of it as like a prequel to Episode 3, just to familiarize you with the portal gun. That's also why it's so short: It's not a "full game" if you will.
I hope it doesn't appear in Ep 3. The portal gun is one of those devices that makes the entire environment seem really contrived.
"Why's that wall shaped funny? Oh, it's so I can launch off it with a portal. Thanks Combine!"
Sure, HL2's always been about puzzle solving and the environments have always been convenient in that sense, but the portal gun would just take it to a ridiculous level.

Unless they use it like they did the supercharged gravity gun Rob, just a small section towards the end of the game or something similar. For the most part I agree with you though, I don't want to see the portal gun in Ep.3, I just hope people start coming up with some interesting mods for portal soon.
It doesn't matter how long it appears in the game. Unless part of the game takes place in a testing chamber like Portal's, the levels are going to feel really weird and unnatural. I kind of felt that way in the post-escape portion of Portal, but in Portal's case it was easy to acknowledge that this was a cleverly designed puzzle game and just enjoy yourself.
Half-Life is more story driven then puzzle driven. I think it would be a bad idea to include it.
Dresden

Yeah, it'd be a bit lame to include the portal gun in Episode 3. Portal's a great game, loved it, very clever. Half-life 2 is also a great game; best shooter around in my opinion.
However... don't combine them. Let Portal stay on its own.
