View Full Version : infractions for aolisms

BAN ME PLEASE

jezus wtf srsly

I understand that if a new user comes in and makes his second post 'omg th@t was like lawl" that he deserves an infraction for it because it was just plain stupid. But Slowcheetah, who has apparently been around for some time, got an infraction for using "wtf" in his(her?) post. And it wasn't like that's all she wrote, but it seems pretty silly to give a user an infraction for using one small aolism, especially if they wrote more than just that in their post. Maybe a warning at most.

You give people a foot and they will take a mile.

Tough tits. Don't use AOLisms. They're annoying, and unless you're in Spame, they aren't allowed.

The only objection I have to the strictness of typing is that 90% of the time the poster loses all personality. Although obviously I don't have trouble typing properly, my normal online personality is quite limited and I find myself going to type things that might be infractable, so I have to stop. Then I look at my post thinking, gosh I sound boring. But I understand the reasoning behind it, and if people don't like it, there's nothing keeping them here against his or her will.

It doesn't have to make you sound boring. You could expand your vocabulary and throw in some colorful words! It does make the forums look different from most other forums around, though. It makes us look a little more intelligent.

Okay, but only for Explosm. I'll use the thesaurus and replace every possible word with a less generic alternative.

First try:

Aye, saving exclusively for Explosm. I elect to apply the thesaurus and supersede every attainable expression via a non-subordinate discretion.

...never mind.

Boring is good.

That's not what he meant. Aolism don't give the post spice, they make the post hard to read. If you are really trying for a fun post you can just do what quaddy does and swear before every word.

I see what you're saying. But at the same time, if "LOL" and "O_o" are part of your personality, that might be a sign that you're way too caught up in the Internet.

AOLisms just show how fucking lazy people are. We don't want to type out full words, it'll actually take more than 20 seconds. :indiff:

I was just teasing.

I don't know who quaddy is, but I have to ask:

If someone posted:

"Wow, that was hilarious. But I must say, wtf at all the memes? Either way, I lol'd."

As opposed to:

"Fuck I crap love shit to ass dance penis in damn clubs fuck at fuck night."

It's not equally 'hard' to read? I've never seen a quaddy post so I don't know exactly what you meant, but that's what I imagined. If it was in the spame forum, it doesn't matter either way, but if it was a normal forum I'm sure there would be infractions.

Like I said, I do understand the reasoning, so I'm not really arguing. I know I sure as hell don't like trying to read something "wear sum1 tipez lick dis cuz wtf lol dats nawt cool srsly" but on the flip side I don't mind a post "Where someone types like this, lol."

I don't know about looking more intelligent though. Maybe just more regulated.

@Rob

Well I've personally never been partial to "LOL, R U SRS?" But it was like way too much thinking involved to not do "o.o" at the end of my posts, or "XD" for that matter.

Those were in response to Mormon saying that aolisms made a post harder to read. But really I'm not here to argue. I just said I don't disagree with your rules or think they are unreasonable, I'm just stating my own opinion too.

I agree that one thrown into a paragraph doesn't hurt. I reversed SlowCheetah's and the other person's.

The rules here are set and people should know them. I understand using them once or twice, but they are pretty damn annoying.

Once in a paragraph isn't anything big, but when it's just a sentence long, and it starts with one... I think it's worthy of one. It's not like the post even contributed in the least [Lazer's at least Cheetah's could be argued].

Um... http://forums.explosm.net/showthread.php?t=9377 theres no aolism in that post.

People who post AOLism's must die :indiff: Unless it's really funny. There are some of the older folks that psost a sentence like. "lolz dat waz so funi lolz" as a mocking thing. What needs to be realised is the difference between mocking and just being an ass. Even so, I think my post filter should be implemented.

By the way GSOM "STFU" Is an AOLism, just in case it slipped in there.
And SOAD, "popl", he fucked up the AOLism of "ppl". Also, he has no capitals. And it was generally a retarded post. Wyatt knows what he is doing.

Actually you are wrong. Read the title of the thread. "Round 1-Kevosk VS Popl8"

And it was a joking post in the comic competition. The only thing he didn't do was capitalize.

This thread is a bitch and moan fest. Mods should just decide on the spot if it is a rank post or not. Its easy to tell what posts suck.

The post is also formated really oddly as well.

Correct language seems to have served everywhere except the internet fine without people dying of boredom.
Also, how has OMG WTF LOL DATS WACK YO got any more personality than "what the fuck, that's really strange"?

It doesn't have more, it has way, way, way less. The second one is perfectly acceptable in my opinion, but the first would make me want to knife something.

I tend to let one little "lol" or "wtf" in an otherwise alright post slide, especially if it's someone who I know contributes to the forums. As was said earlier, if we start to make it obvious that we're letting AOLisms slide, ppl will start to abuse it and they'll start creeping in more and more. It's difficult to know where to draw the line, so an all-out ban is probably for the best.

Dude. AOLism, and then you say "So an all-out ban is probably for the best". :indiff: Anyways, I do agree with the all-out ban, because it seems that a noob comes in, doesn't read rules, doesn't lurk, sees a post by Quadros that says "lolz i r so cul cuz i can drw shit comics" or something of the like, so they think it's ok since no one complains. So they in turn post like a shit throwing monkey. All-out ban for the win.

Welcome to the real world RabidMonkey. Ironic Sarcasm exists.

I think it's unfair the Quadros should be able to get away with talking like a moron. he is no better than anyone else.

Rob

If you think Quadros is getting away with something, please link to a few posts. I want to see what you're talking about and I don't follow Quadros' posting career as closely as you do.

Unfortunately, i can't dig up any proof, but i'm sure many people (and possibly even Quadros) himself will admit to it.

I think he uses it it in irony, but it is often full sentence of AOLisms.

Why would RabidMonkey have said it if there wasn't truth in it. No smoke without fire and all that.

Hey what's fucking up fucking bitch wank fuck fuck.

See, you can be funny without AOLisms.

You're probably one of the unfunniest people on the forums.

But if you use colourful language and big words people call you a pseudo-intellectual, pretentious douchebag :-/

Nobody is forcing you to communicate a certain way. We ban for AOLisms because talking in internet lingo is the exact opposite of having a personality. People who can't communicate without using "LOL FTW O_o" are faceless idiots conforming to 4chan trends. They're not interesting or funny.

It's pretty straightforward, so there isn't much to discuss here. Closed.
