View Full Version : Lets improve our fanart

A lot of people complain of shitty jokes and shitty art in the fanart thread(s) so why don't we refine our art and joke skills here. More intense criticism.
So here's my character style:
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff177/IHasCoconuts/newstyle2.jpg
I'd like to keep the eye and mouth style the same sort of way (Eye whites, pupils, detailed mouth.)

If you notice all four artist's drawings are a lot less detailed than some of the people's characters in the fan art thread. This is a comic based on stick figures It doesn't really need to have shading or things like that. I mean Kris's comics' characters barely have mouths.
It's a circle with two eyes. A rectangle and two, possibly up to four lines. It isn't hard. If you need help with it, you shouldn't be drawing.

True. But if you don't put detail into it, problems appear. First of all, your chars will probably look like the ones of Matt, Rob, Kris, or Dave. If you post it on the fan-art thread, people will say that you steal their chars and stuff. Second, if you don't put detail into it and make sure they don't plagiarize real C&H, your comics will probably look very bad, like it's the first time you're using MSPaint.

This is Lolton. He loves you.
I liked Savril's character style of not having arms initially. I kinda combined Matt and Dave's art styles, and always changing the characters' expression (except for Lolton.)
Relaps' characters have those sexy body curves.
And they work great for his one-two punchlines.
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l149/Poshnak/basics.png
This guy waves hello.
Maybe day dreams a little.
Has a slight-slope at the top of his body to where he faces, slightly curved legs. No longer has a sickly off-green face.
Lag, sort the legs out. It's like he's sitting, but his knees are REALLY far up his leg. Either make them straight, a curve, or kink at the knees, the way you have it just now looks really messy. The arm nearest us should be further up and more to the left, not coming from his chest.

And I really like Ox's old gradient style.

Use the same line thickness for all your outlines. It looks messy with a thin outline around his head, while a thick one's around the body.
When I made fanart comics, I drew my stickmen with hands and feet:
http://usera.imagecave.com/Matterialize/sushi.png
After that, the hands got ditched and I changed the bodies so they had broad shoulders:
http://usera.imagecave.com/Matterialize/rman.PNG
Oh, and I stopped using the circle tool for heads.

Mmyes.. If you need help, go read that tutorial I made.
Now, broad shoulders are good when they are used properly. For example, matt's characters, and Robs characters.
Legs that aren't at the edge of the body are only good when used properly. Again, an example is robs characters, Mostly because they have a curve at the bottom, unlike Kris' style, where his characters bodies are squares, and the legs come out the very edges. However, if your character has a rectangle for a body (lag's character) do not use broad shoulders and put the legs at the edges.
Somewhat confusing, But if your characters legs are in the middle of a rectangular body he looks like a gimp.

This is just...Well.. some guy. Unfortunatley I don't have names for them.
I really like Ursername's, JesusTastesHoly's, and Kris's style of art. But I couldn't draw like them so I just kinda.. did this. I do try to copy the blank disturbing faces on some of Kris's and maybe even JTH's.
EDIT: Fuck it! I'm naming him Chuck Manjoney!

Standard Character. I used a circle for the head then pulled it about a bit. He doesn't have a name, but name him if you want to.
Relaps' looks good. Pyro's is basic and Matt's heads look dumb but they both still look pretty good. The rest are proper weak.

They're glorified stick men, they're ALL basic, but yours (looked good but) had virtually no embelishment or detail.
My flash trial ran out and my will to post more fan art shrivelled up.
I wasnt to know if it was good or not.

Coconuts, I would really suggest you cut out the eyes and just put black dots. That's the main thing. For a more attractive looking style, cut down the head size by about half and make the mouths more simple. For colors, the skin tones are all fine, although I suggest you use more neutral colors for the shirt/bodysuit, such as not lime green or neon blue.
lol@ the black guy who looks like he's gonna steal something.
Here is my character sheet, I really don't like it though.
It seems too perfect (ie. perfect circles and squares) I really want something more simple that is easy to convey emotion with.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/4024/charactersheetti0.png
Well, remove the shading, the arms and maybe make the bodies a little shorter.
Triangle bodies = no.
That'll make 'em more simple.
Hows this look?

No, stop that. Make the bodies a little more square-ish, and draw the character so that we see him from the side, it's easier to judge then.
Hows this?
Btw: I like the legs :/ It makes it not look like every one elses.

GUYS! Oh my god.
You know, the box with tools like Pen Tool, Oval, etc, is gone! I just clicked on it's outline, and I moved it around a little, like, oh, this can be moved around, pretty neat. And then suddenly, IT WAS GONE! Now I've been checking through a lot of the Flash options that I thought would work. Not going to ruin it more by clicking something weird. Helpz.
Oh and SOAD, your style reminds me of Ursername's old, but he doesn't use that one anymore, so I guess it's okay you use that character, just with a thinner outline.

Here's my character, I haven't done comics recently because it was an ass finding my old style and making original jokes was a bother.
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/7818/downtherefl1.png
So I wanted my new style to revolve around:
Egg-ish shaped head.
Check mark style arms.
Simple rectangular body.
And simple legs with stamp shaped feet.

Mine were just drawn with a tablet in Flash - no shape tools involved. Now I keep a template with the main body and panels for quick comic-making.
I clicked the brush tool, set it on size 4, selected pressure sensitivity and zoomed in 200% to draw the body. Then I copy and paste him how many times I need to and draw on his arms and legs in whatever pose I want them in. I create a new layer and draw his eyes and mouth which are usually on the bottom half of the head and aligned.
Vector programs are good because you can resize your drawings with no quality loss:

Oh, right.
Also, I forgot to post my tutorial in this thread, here it goes.
This is a tutorial I made for making C&H characters in Flash MX 2004. This would be called a very simple character, when you figured out how to make this one, and you want to improve, use the brush / pencil tool to make your own unique style, which could be like this:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb62/ne3_explosm/AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.png (COMMENT ON IT BITCHES!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okPKebwqFiY
It's poor, but I guess new people could use it.
Two good hints: If you drew something wrong, or something you regret, simply hold down the CTRL button and press Z, this will undo your latest action. Oh, you wanted it anyway? Hold down CTRL and press Y, and it's back again.
Everyone should know this but: instead of rightclicking something you want to copy, hold down CTRL and press C, then hold down CTRL again and press V, and you've got a copy of whatever you copied.

The thread is fine but why do we need tutorials? To be honest if people can't make a rectangle a circle and 2 lines in Flash they shouldn't be making anything, or they shouldn't own Flash.

Lol@Hats Of making his in PowerPoint. I'd never guess he did something like that to make his comics.
Anyway, I don't really have a style- It depends on what the joke is. I've been using this because it's the easiest one for me to draw:

Use the same line thickness for all your outlines. It looks messy with a thin outline around his head, while a thick one's around the body.
