I have Vista, and I am getting windows 7 for free from my school.
From what I can tell, I gotta download the file, burn it on a disk, and boot up with that disk. When I update, will all my files and shit be there somehow? I am forced to assume not, but I can hope. Never changed an OS before, so can someone give me the shit I need to do before and after I try and update? |

Always back up your files.
Windows does let you keep your files, and just upgrade the OS, but if shit hits the fan, and you have to reinstall everything, you'll be kicking your self if you didn't back up. |

Just click upgrade when you're asked and you should be alright. Backing up can't hurt, but anecdotally, I've done 3 or 4 Windows 7 installs without anything going wrong.
