"Christian" music gets a pretty bad rap, generally. Sure, there are lots of groups out there that only want the extra popularity, but there are also plenty of bands that come from a Christian point of view that are pretty damned good:
-mewithoutyou is one of the most unique and poetic new bands I've heard in a while, and they're pretty adamant about their faith -Extol's older stuff was pretty fucking epic -MxPx is one of the most fun pop-punk groups around, and they started on a Christian label -Thrice is pretty involved in the Christian community, and a lot of their lyrics deal with blatantly Christian issues -Anberlin makes some seriously fucking solid rock music (although I'm not so big on their new album) -Living Sacrifice was pretty damned influential on a lot of current metal and hardcore artists, and their name is influenced by a bible verse I could go on, but my point is that it's kind of bullshit to disregard a band because the musicians write what they believe in. You don't have to agree with what they say to like and respect their music. |

I listen to anarchist bands but I dislike that whole thing for the same reason, it's just really lame to focus on one single topic like that.

Most of those bands don't focus just on their faith. Thrice writes about a lot of social issues, MxPx writes stupid shit about girls and parties or whatever, Extol wrote about whatever the fuck they wrote about.
I guess I can concede that bands that focus only on one thing for every song are pretty annoying. Organized Christianity is a huge cash cow, and a lot of people milk it for all it's worth. Regardless, it's still pretty lame to call all music made by people of a single belief crap. |

Christian rappers are mostly preach first and be a good rapper second so 99% of them are garbage.

I agree. I had one friend who tried to get me to listen to this one guy. Flow-wise he sounded like Eminem which wasn't bad but all his lyrics were about how people don't rap about God or how when things are bad you should pray. It was gross.

KJ52. When I was younger my parents sent me off to Bible camp and this dude put on a concert. It was kind of embarrassing.

Yeah! That was his name. I just remember everyone else giving a silent nod of approval when the girl played his CD. I just remember that song that pretty much completely ripped off Stan by Eminem.

LMFAO. Their music is bad and they should feel bad. It's bad electronic beats mixed with dumb lyrics that don't mean anything.
And most rap artists, with a few exceptions. |

3OH!3 is literally the worst band in the past five years. One of many lines that made me hate them was "Shut your lips. Do the Helen Kellar and talk with your hips." Unless there is something I am missing here, that is easily the stupidest fucking thing I have heard all year.

The last three bands mentioned are all pretty awful. Is 3Oh!3 supposed to be hip hop?

I think so. I've always heard them labeled as electronica/hip-hop or something along those lines.
I hate how popular they are over here. And my area code has a 0 in the middle of it so everyone thinks they're being witty when they spell it as OH! |

It's sad that popular music has become pre-made electronic sounds put together into a 5 minute loop + people talking about stupid shit, of course tampered with by a computer program so they sound like they can sing.

And to go back to the whole Christian music thing, I have to agree that Christian bands suck. They're in a kind of Catch-22 with me I suppose. If they say their Christian and they're songs are almost exclusively about Christianity, they're just annoying. If they say they're Christian but then sound like any other band, I wonder why they even identify themselves as such. Though I can't find the quote, I'm pretty sure Flannery O'Connor said "I'm a writer first and a Christian second." I think music should be the same way. Be a good musician, and then if you want to sing about some Christian/religious stuff, it will work much better. |

I think it's only Christian groups who form with the intention of being Christian groups are the ones that suck. There are some bands, or artists anyway, who have Christian overtones to their music but they are still mind-bendingly good. Two good examples would be Sufjan Stevens and Judee Sill.

I don't love to hate this band but this is a kind of all-in bad music thread so I'll contribute with it.
I just listened to alexisonfire for the first time. The song was Pulmonary Archery or something like that. My impression is as follows: Uninspired, tedious, over-polished pop metal with unemotional screams layered on top of the bland instrumentation. The screams clashed with the rest of the music but not enough to create any dissonance, it just sounded like somebody pasted the vocal track from a bad screamo song onto random parts of a bad pop metal song. It was particularly disappointing because I thought they were indie like Modest Mouse and I was just informed they are post-hardcore. I was hoping they would change my mind about post-hardcore, which apart from some good emo and screamo is just gay metal and gay metalcore. My mind was not changed. Like, how do they even call that shit hardcore, it is so slow and mind numbing and the songs go for minutes on end. My advice if you're in a post-hardcore band: get out of the fucking studio and into your garage; and speed it up - I haven't got 5 minutes to spare to listen to your shitty music so wrap it up in less than a minute if you can. |

I seriously think Metallica started sucking right after Cliff Burton died! The Black album is a freaking joke! It's pretty much gone downhill from there!
Also, bands like Manowar, Exciter, and the like are jokes as well. I'll stick with Immortal, Urgehal, Funeral Mist, and Slayer!!! |

I could never tell if I liked that band. Always heard good things and recently tried to listen to them. They're not terrible but I can't say I really like them. I enjoy City and Colour though.
