You may have noticed by now that while surfing the comic pages, you may get a popunder every once and a while. This is intentional. Let me first say that Rob, Dave, Kris and myself were VERY wary of adding this and only did so under specific circumstances.
We've been putting a lot more focus into the C&H shorts. Speaking of which, why not subscribe to our YouTube channel? We absolutely love doing them and have gotten a fantastic response so far. There's just one catch: they're really costly to make. We've hired our good buddy Chase to help animate full-time, an honest to god music composer and a slew of professional voice actors. We decided to add a popunder to help finance this endeavor for the time being.
Here's the facts with this thing:
1. It should only ever show up ONCE every 24 HOURS.
2. It should only ever show up on the comic pages.
3. It should silently pop behind your current window; you shouldn't even really notice until you close the window.
This is just a temporary means of putting out a high quality short much more frequently. Again, we were very apprehensive to add it in, but we feel it's worth it.
If you truly can't stand it, by all means, go ahead and block it. The page that loads it is http://www.explosm.net/gid.html and the root script that loads it is http://mg.dt00.net/*, so block those urls and you should be fine. For those of you who don't block ads, thank you. This is a full-time job for all of us, and while we get by, we're not rolling in cash. We'll be sure to let you know when that happens, though.
We hope it's not too much of a bother. I'm generally a strong supporter of advertising-supporting-free-content, but popups are usually too much. Hopefully the intrusion isn't too much.
I'd gladly take some extra advertising for more shorts. It's very understandable that you guys need to do this to fund your work. Keep us laughing and no one will care. :)
When I first noticed them I was disappointed that you guys would start using those kinds of adds, but I hadn't noticed the connection between the more frequent shorts and these new kinds of adds. Your shorts are great, and totally worth having those adds.
I have however, noticed that when using the web browser Google Chrome, instead of being a popunder, it's more like a poptab. it creates a new tab in the current window with the add in it, and this tab becomes the "active" tab so it's appearing on top instead of underneath. (I tried using internet explorer and it worked properly as a popunder, so i know it's the browser and not my computer).
I have no problem with advertising and I completely understand the necessity so I don't block ads, especially for a site like explosm. Having said that, I do find pop-unders incredibly irritating. I actually prefer pop-ups, which may sound a little insane.
They actually do pop-up on top of the current window, and then they disappear as the main window regains focus. But I can't concentrate on anything because I know theres an ad hiding behind the window just waiting for me, so I have to go through my current windows and find it. If it was a regular pop-up, I could just close it, or move it off to the side or something; I feel like I have a lot less control with pop-unders.
Is there really a significant difference in income between a pop-under that occurs once every 24 hours and in page ads that are always present?
Just by the way, if you guys invited donantions via paypal, I'm sure the community would chip in there.
If you truly can't stand it, by all means, go ahead and block it. The page that loads it is http://www.explosm.net/gid.html and the root script that loads it is http://mg.dt00.net/*, so block those urls and you should be fine.
Wow. Thanks for the refreshing honesty, Matt. I'm gonna add C&H to my adblocker's whitelist due to, in part, that.
I didnt block your ad even though I use ad blockers... You guys totally shouldn't have said what to block, and let people figure it out for themselves :p
Quick question: are all your ads SFW? if so i'll gladly disable AdBlock Plus for you guys.
Sometimes sketchy ads get through, but I do my best to squash them asap. Never full on NSFW, just... questionable. Using the Advertising Talk thread to point out nasty ads helps tremendously.
I actually kinda like the stuff those popups ya'll have got. It's a good way for me to burn an hour or so a day away reading over their articles and stuff. :)
Do I have to actually do anything with the pop-under for you to get payed, or does it automatically happen when it comes up? I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to help.
honestly, I think the animated shorts rather suck, and I certainly don't appreciate the pop-ups which, for some reason, are eluding my pop-up blocker.
once every twenty-four hours is every time I look at the site, if I look at the same time every day. This *will* impact how often I look at your comics.
I can understand when your comics are bad, but this is something that should take a lot of work. starting with a bad idea makes it worthless.
Putting out a comic every day, they aren't all going to be gems. Every now and then what may seem like a great and funny idea for a comic to the creator can be an absolute piece of shit to the majority of viewers. But that's just something that happens with any daily comic, and the creators know this.
Hell, you guys give me a reason to know what day it is so if i have to close a popup at the end of my internet session to keep you guys informing me as to the date and more importantly decade (all that time travel, or perhaps all that drink) then I forget what i was saying. Oh yes, long live the Ghandi!
Just made an account to say I'm a huge fan of these comics, and if to support them you need to do the popunder, It make's no difference. I'd gladly click an ad if it meant you guys get a little extra money.
I don't mind them at all. In fact, some of them are entertaining. For instance, today I found out men secretly lust over female bodybuilders and extremely religious chicks.

Backing up what superelf said about Google Chrome, the pop under creates a new tab which then becomes the active tab, but it really does not bother me. Shorts are great!
I'm not sure if anyone's actually gone through that ad with all the pictures in it, besides InnerDemon, but some of them are actually pretty cool. It's not a bad ad at all.
Not going to block it either, keep the shorts coming!
I have no problem with the ads, however I thought I should throw this out there - I don't know if it's just me, but I use google chrome as my web-browser and the ads don't pop under, they open as a new tab on top of everything.
That's my only complaint - they don't pop under they pop over
Ugh, sorry, but the popup just got me in a shitload of trouble. I was just checking C&H on the family computer (While I was supposed to be doing homework). Harmless, right? Well I closed it out, but missed the gid popup. The stuff on that popup is NSFW and my mom saw it so yea. Now I'm just blocking it on my computer. Sorry about not making that money off of me, but y'know, sometimes it's necessary.
Okay, so Chrome is whacked. But that's what you get for using products still in beta!
You don't have to do anything once it pops up; it still counts for us. But don't let that stop you from checking something out if it's legitimately interesting. They're the same ads that show up below the comics.
And thanks to everyone being so supportive. You guys are the best.
I just wanted to add that I hate pop-unders; they're far more sinister than pop-ups. Part of this is because I very rarely close my browser window (I put my computer to sleep at night), so I won't find it until much, much later.
Moreover, I don't mind ads if they're relevant--but I have yet to see an ad I like, underneath the comics (the ones to the side are usually better, and I have clicked on them in the past). I want to support you guys, but pop-unders can't be the only solution! Thanks for giving out the URLs.
I would rather support you by buying more books to join the current one on my shelf, than deal with pop-under ads.
Do you guys make money when we click on the ads right below the comics? I dont allow the popunders but i do click on those ads fairly often. theyre usually pretty interesting.
