Well i don't really have any top five per se, but there are a few movies you can't go wrong with. Psycho, Nightmare on Elm Street, Jaws, and Halloween are all movies that will remain timeless.

I'm sorry but The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock really isn't scary at all whatsoever.

I'd go for Dog Soldiers, Braindead and The Descent if you want a lot of gore.

Braindead is funnier than it is scary though. Black humour, kind of.

Silence of the Lambs, It, Psycho (Hitchcock version, obviously), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 original only) and Arachnophobia are some of my favourites.

1. Scary Movie
2. Scary Movie 2
3. Scary Movie 3
4. Scary Movie 4
5. ...

Sorry, I just had to. Anyway, I don't really have any favorite scary movies.
The only scary movie I watched in a mood that didn't make the movie feel lame was the Blair Witch Project (<3). Awesome movie

EDIT: Btw, ne3. I thought that Kollegiet was really sucky, that's all I ever heard about about when it hit the big screen. (Which is why I haven't watched it).
How is it scary? Like shock effects or psycological?

In no particular order:

Dawn of the Dead, the remake (has good gore and some scenes that should make you jump, kind of depressing though). Evil Aliens (horror-comedy, lots of gore). Undead (Australian movie, it's awesome and has good gore scenes in it, but it's kind of confusing the first time you watch it). 28 Weeks Later (it's just plain fantastic).

Also Braindead, Bad Taste and House on Haunted Hill.

You should also check out Cannibal Holocaust (not scary but a shitload of gore).

The older movies make me laugh.

Room 1408
Exorcism of Emily Rose or The Exorcist
Dawn of the Dead
Those are the ones that the group has agreed on so far. The saw series is cool but it didn't really scare me, same with 28 days later.

It still is banned here. Apparently the main actor wasn't sure if it was a movie or a snuff film while they were shooting, and kept a gun on him all the time.

Gory or scary?

GORY:

1. August Underground series (probably the most depraved movies I've ever seen in my life)
2. Cannibal Holocaust
3. Murder-Set-Pieces
4. Haute Tension
5. Flower of Flesh and Blood (I think this is the title)

SCARY:

1. The Shining
2. The Descent
3. Session 9
4. Event Horizon
5. Eraserhead

That should be enough for now. And avoid every Saw movie except for the first.

Yeah, they were. The producers were going to fake them, but the tribe they were shooting with believed in killing them for a feast or something.

Apparently IT is really creepy. I haven't seen it though. The saw trilogy is a classic. There's Dark Water (Japanese Horror not the English one.) Se7en is pretty good but only because Brad Pitt is in it. I was a fan of the Blair Witch but it's not really scary and it doesn't make sense unless yo research it. HOSTEL is a definite. I couldn't get through the very first bit of gore.

You won't really find any scary movies made in the last 10 years. "Horro" films have all just become teeny-shock films where nothing scary actually happens.

Now, I'm 30, so very little actually scares me anymore, but here are some old classics.

IT, Dawn of the Dead (original), The Burning, The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street (first one is best), Texas Chainsaw (original), Friday the 13th Part 2.

Ignore Hostel, if you haven't seen it already. It's a crap movie made to shock, and it even failed in that. The first half is a porno, and the second half is a pathetic attempt at "extreme" gore. There are hundreds of movies with better T&A and gore than Hostel.

Hostel II was better. It worked more on the storyline than just putting in random boobs and torture at every opportunity. But it's got less in the gore/nudity area, so if you want more of that, then just watch Hostel 1. Or avoid both and pick up a Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th.

I laughed so much when I saw this. In a good way. The people in it had an uncanny knack to stay alive long after suffering horrific injuries like both arms being ripped off, and a stake through the back and out the mouth.

I also agree with 28 Weeks Later. Definitely a must-see. Also the Evil Dead franchise.

The first Evil Dead is awesome. After that they just became comedies.

But the first is awesome. The vine-raping scene, and the witch in the cellar scene are classics!

It's sort of a horror, but it's definitely one of my favorite movies.

I always thought Grudge 1 and 2 were scary. Not many people think so.
As stated before, The Shining isn't scary, it's just REALLY creepy.

1. The original and remake of Night of the living Dead
2. The Shining
3. Haloweens 1 & 2
4. Silent Hill (Sorta scary, but fits well with in the category of Haloween)
5. Pet Semetary

Don't get hostel 1/2, both fucking suck.
Ring (get the jap version), The Shinning(probably best scary movie ever made), The Exorcist, Dawn of the Dead (remake. The original aged badly), 1408.

I just can't comprehend how people can possibly find things like IT scary. It's a fucking clown with claws. In the original he's the personification of one's biggest fears.

Am I the only one who thought The Descent was a peice of crap, about 2/3 of the movie was them climbing through caves and then there was like 10 minutes of blind monsters that were tricked very easily. Same goes for 28 days and weeks later. And 1408. And hostel. Jesus christ they make alot of bad horror movies.
As for my pick, I would go:
1) The grudge
2) Texas chainsaw massacre (I liked the remake better, but they're both good)
3) Exorcism of emily rose

I can't even finish the fucking list.
